I hear of so many people with big issues with them. Heavy breathing, oil in air filter, replacing of rings all the time, cracked this and that, overheating...........


I personlly dont know anyone who has a good one - but there must be some around.

id say no,my dads got 1 in his old 110 that he never had any serious problems with,was gonna put 1 im my 90 but a tdi came up at the right price so ive now got a couple of td's spare

Like all things, there's good and bad.  Trouble is the bad overshadow the good.  Regular oil and filter changes etc. and things should be ok. :)

like I said there must a good one around and it sounds like Redlines Dad has IT.  

I have heard of sooo many of these breaking I wouldnt touch one.

Good engine for 50K miles then a waste of time IMHO.

If you get a vehicle with one in it, run it as long as possible then be prepared to change it for something else.

not wanting to put ur bonfire out tim but just put 1 in a 90 & it goes just aswell as a tdi ,so well infact i questioned me goin 2 the expense of getting a tdi instead of using the td's i have in the garage

You won't put out my bonfire.   If you have found a TD that goes as well as a Tdi, then you either have a remarkable TD engine or a completely shot Tdi...  even on paper they are totally different.

My experience with (many) TDs has been that they will fail.... it is just a question of when.

the tdi i have has done 40k from a full rebuild by turners i think & the td came out a scrapped 110 that had a rotten chassis,im as surprised as you but it did make me question whether it was worth laying out the £600 for the tdi when i got a pair of td's for a lot less

My step-grandad has had 1 for the last several years in his 110.

It's done lots of miles (150k plus i think) and has never put a foot wrong.

He services it regularly (oil, filters etc) and has had a new cambelt put on it.

It is the original engine before anyone asks.

I think if you look after them properly, they should run forever.

I wouldn't hesitate to get 1 (very nearly did for our Lightweight)

I had one - sweet as nut - 170k miles and a lot quieter then teh 300tdi I have now - I was so confident I sold it the the next door neighbour whose really pleased with it too

I had one - it smoked like a pig, ran hot, spewed oil into the air filter

Jason had one - same symptoms as the above plus cam belt us , then gave up big style by pushing oil out of absolutley everywhere.

etc... etc...

if you read the posts on the LRO forum hardly a day goes by where you dont hear about one with heavy oil & breathing issues.

I think that they will be quiet as they are indirect injection as opposed to the tdi being direct.


The general opinion is that you are far better off with a tdi, more reliable and more powerful.

thanks for the advice, i would like a 200 tdi but i just cant afford to buy one as they seem to be about £2000-£3000 more.

I have a good one in a 1989 110 station wagon. Yes it does blow oil into the air filter. I change the cam belt every 50k not 60k as in the handbook, regular oil changes and keep the cooling system up to scratch. I don't run the engine at full load on the motorway otherwise it starts to heat up alot, it is happy at 60 - 65 mph. It will run at that speed all day without overheating. Generally just don't give the engine a hard time. I've had the vehicle for just over 10 years now. It had 48500 on the clock, now at 173500 miles.
