Went laning with SWB Shogun and a L200 recently, was a couple of spots where i slowed thinking i'd have to recover the Shogy but it managed (only had crappy Yoko AT's), it only got stuck cos of its silly side bars on a bad crest, was highly impressed, the 3.5 V6 sounded lovely.

Yeeh they are good and I totally agree that the side steps cause clearance difficulties. Take a look at my website below and go to the Yorks Dales section in the gallery to see where we took the Mitsie last year without a problem except for many scraping noises coiming from the steps.

The rest of the clearance is fine and she had loads of grunt for off roading.

They ain't side steps, they're rock sliders / sill protectors! I have bent mine into all sorts of shapes. Jump up and down on the a few times and they're back into some sort of reasonable shape. With them you will ground a little easier however you just add it to the forward momentum to slide it that little way extra!

Don't underestimate the Pajero / Shoggy as a toy. I have ended up pulling out Defenders that got stuck where I had just ploughed through before now.
I suppose most of it is down to driver competency really.

I had underestimated it badly, it did well considering the rubbish tyres, A few weeks earlier a Jimny impressed me too, I'm having to scrap the old Jap C**p thinking.

I worked in the desert oilfields of Libya for 4 years and had a Desert Pack Defender 90 for running to the remote stations & wadi bashing. I thought it was the bee's gonads.
I bought the Pajero because the price was right and I needed something to tow the horsebox. When I took it off road I was impressed. I expected it to get stuck in the 1st field, but it didn't, it just kept plodding on.. and on... and on. The amount of comments you get back from other off roaders that have never been out before with a Shoggy / Paj is quite satisfying. Why not ask the Shoggy owner for a bash in it nest time you are out together you might be surprised!

i have a paj 2.5td swb and been with the pajero club all over up n down the country, and belive me never underestimate them! yes i have got stuck but where i have been stuck so has landies, troopers ect if your a game driver you can do it no matter what you drive i know the crack is good mits vrs landies ect but there will always be a suzuki coming along to pass you lol,
i am new to this site seems ok, look forward to showing you lot what a paj can really do, i earned my name ask the lads why? lol

I suppose most of it is down to driver competency really.

:lol: na in all honesty they are quite good my mate round the corner from me has alwb paj and its lifted by 5inches i think with massive wheels and etcs on it nice bit of kit :D but i will always be loyal to landrover :D :D

i had a paj lwb for over 3 years, and its off road ability was never on doubt, but it was hopless on road, the engine was weak (2.5tdi) in both power and reliability, it kept throwing cam belts off because of the daft balancer belt breaking, which i eventually left off, and it struggled to get over 60mph

but off road, its was great 8)

With a few mods the SWB Paj is very capable off road

Mine even sailed through axle deep 'porridge' at Bovingdon on worn ATs :shock:

Mines ok even with road tyres on been down the dales twice now and over Walna Scar a few times (both ways) & Kielder Forest getting stuck is part of the fun !!!!

I've just uploaded a compilation video of my Paj in action - have a look here.

They have strengths and weaknesses just like anything else, and there are times when a Landy will do better than a Paj, and times when the Paj will beat the Landy.

Of course it's more down to the driver in the end...

I wheel a Monty Sport and I have gotten stuck and I have not gotten stuck. It depends on the terrain and how well I drive. I've have just about every make of vehicle on the end of my winch, except a Landover. So it's really all about how you build and drive your rig. IMHO
