Greasy Nipples
« on: May 07, 2005, 16:44:22 »
Got your attention, I hope so ;)

Been off roading and I need to apply grease to all those bits that get affected. Can someone advise me what to treat.

On the subject of nipples, excuse my total ignorance but how does one use a greas gun on a grease nipple/

TIA

providing you,ve got the right end on your grease gun it should just push on to the nipple then you pump the gun to push the grease in, if its not on straight it will just spew out the side making a mess
apart from the propshafts i dont think any thing else needs greasing unless you have greasable ball joints on the track rods etc but even then you dont want to over grease them as all the grease will push the rubber boot out

Worth also to clean off the nipple before greasing, either a cloth and or a wire brush depending on the condition. Some even come with a plastic cover over them  Saves clogging the nipple up and contaminating the bearing/joint etc

Also if your been in the wet stuff, be worth checking the levels and contamination in the gearbox/transfer box/axles and swivel housings.

Damian,

You'll need to grease the propshafts sliding joint front and rear and also there is a grease nipple in the UJ's on the propshaft. Once you've greased them up, remove any surplus grease that comes out as it will centrifugally flick on to your exhaust, smelling quite nice when it gets hot!!

Oh, and taking of swivels, I drained the oil out of mine yesterday and replaced with Britpart one shot grease, pleased to say the oil came out completely un-contaminated. Getting the grease in on the drivers side was easy, the passenger side is a [!Expletive Deleted!] though as the steering bar mount is directly in line with the fill hole. In the end I used a short length of old washing machine hose which 'screws' in quite nicely to the hole, and then just squeezed the grease in, stopping periodically for the air bubble to come back up the tube, a bit like the geyser old faithfull spouting!! At least I'll not have to worry about those again!

It's nice to know that of all the places a Land Rover can go, anywhere could be one of them!

Sorry to dwel on this. I stuck the grease gun on the nipple today, got a slap ;) and when I depressed the trigger grease splattered everywhere but in the joint.

Am I missing something, I just cant see how the grease gets in, do I have to undo the nipples or something.

You may have to release the ball bearing in the nipple with  small screwdriver or something.  Then hold the grease gun onto the nipple whilst squessing the trigger so it locks on.

Also if no go there wires brush the nipple and then tap the end of the nipple with the wire brush

Also when the grease goes through the uj, check to see that it spills out all 4 sections of the thing.
