Converting a 200tdi engine to run on Petrol ?
« on: May 23, 2012, 06:42:48 »
Not planning on doing it, but just curious if any mad tinkerer has set about converting a 200tdi engine to run on petrol?

It says on the landy engine wiki for the 200tdi :

" Initially turbocharged and naturally aspirated diesel versions and a carburettor-fed petrol version were to be produced. The direct-injection system meant that only machining of the injector sockets was needed to allow the fitment of spark plugs."

They never bothered with the production of the NA or petrol version as the tdi turned out to be *that* good on performance and economy.

We know peeps later did the 200di conversion by leaving out the turbo when fitting into series trucks.
Just just wondering what type of beast a petrol one would have turned out like.

An interesting thought but not sure if it would run properly, however the old series engines were pretty much the same engine in either diesel or petrol I believe.

Maybe someone should try it :)

Someone has fitted a steam engine in an 88

Isnt that what used in the Rover SDI saloon a 2.6 bag of overheating rattly poooooo, lets face it there was no demand for a small petrol engined Disco as the [!Expletive Deleted!] thing they produced showed sold about 6 , No Landrover are not engine producers they are kit car builders like Lotus etc build a nice car then source the engine from others,

if there were such a thing it, first of all wouldn't be a 200tdi petrol. It'd be a 200ti as the d stands for diesel (Turbo, Diesel, Injection)

and technically any 200tdi in a series is just a 200di (assuming the theory of dropping the turbo, instead of re-positioning it)

And there would be a lot of modification required to the head, fuel system (especially if you turning it into a carburettor system, aka by drilling out the fuel injectors, to make space for the spark plugs), inlet manifold, and adding an ignition system. As well as removing redundant systems such as fuel pressure pump, for example.

Turbo Direct Injection sorry to be a pendant. That said as you can direct inject petrol would it not be simpler to re-work the glow plug holes for sparks and use a programmable chip for the ignition with separate coil packs. As an idea?

 No, you're right, don't know what I was thinking when I came up with that in my head  :embarrassed:

Erm, surley the combustion champer in the piston doesn't suit a petrol engine either? they certainly aren't common.

Also you've have to lowe the C:R, usually by avoiding piston projection (lower piston crowns) and a different head.

My Cavalier 1,7D was basically a 2.0l block with the normal cam carrier bolted on top of a special IDI head.  Nice engine if a bit underpowered.

You could probably bore the 2.5 TDi out to over 2.8 on petrol too, but as has been said, LR produces a 16 valve 2.0 MPI and they were poo.
