TD5 PROBLEMS
« on: May 03, 2005, 19:24:10 »
Well, i have always loved the power i get from chipped and big intercooled TD5, now the problems.
Coming back form dartmoor, get a little screaming noise, then a chuff chuff noise, no i am not drivng a train, but a 130 TD5. After speaking to Guru Buck, he laughed and said,"your exhaust manifolds warped, the chipped ones have a habit of doing it", if i leave it, it will pull the threads out of the head, that will be nice.
For each action, there is a equal and opposite action.  More power, More grief. :?  :?

Which chip do you have?  JJ Fearn?  When researching my chip I decided against any of the more extreme modifications because I didn't want to overcook things.  I've heard before of people praising their chip because the vehicle pulls like a train, then in the same breath complaining that they keep having to replace manifolds.  Go figure!

Its a Fearn one, was fitted before i bought it, and pulling about 2.5 tonnes of 130 CSW, makes it work for a living, this also shows in the fact, i just changed the rear drive plates and halfshafts, front drive plates and CV joints, as the amount of play was bad. Hold ing the rear halfshaft still, you could turn the wheel 2" before the shaft moved, and its only done 55,000.

All comes down to EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperatures)...

My mates got a all singing all dancing JE Engineering Chip and has done over 50,000 miles without a problem... and he does drive it rather enthusiastically!!!!

To get power out of a diesel you have to put in more fuel, and unlike a petrol, more fuel leads to higher EGT which can result in quite a bit of damage.
It might be case that some tuners, to get more power, chuck in too much fuel (expecially at full load) which can cause damage to the manifolds.

I'm not saying that some tuners are worse than others (my mate might just be lucky)... but it might be worth investing in an EGT guage so you can see what's going on.
