Just a thought but where do we propose the lost revenue from this idea be made up, higher income tax, reduced nhs contribution or close a couple of schools perhaps? I know the amount of revenue is small but now is not the economic time to do it.
Just a thought.

how about less wages for top mps, slightly less spent blowing people up all around the world, less spent on what i call the eec, less spent on the most expensive roads in the world per inch etc etc etc, plus people like me who own and drive four cars and at the moment pay 3xroadtax as only one is pre 1973 even though one is a 1996 and last year only travelled 850 miles for 6 months worth of tax?? not to mention the fact that despite anyone trying to tell me otherwise its better to keep an old car on the road than the environmental cost of building a new efficient one full of plastics/electronics etc etc, the only totally fair way to tax people when they drive is to A, tax the person per year, thereby enabling him/her to drive a vehicle on the road or B TO put the tax on the fuel so the more you drive the more you pay. in the meantime it would be nice for a few more classic car owners keep there labours of love on the roads for a bit less money every year! [just my humble opinion!!!]

Oh I agree there are fairer ways of recovering the revenue. And if it were to go to a rolling 25years for free tax then I'm sure the economy would benefit from the extra employment generated by keeping all the old cars road worthy. That being said twenty odd years ago cars were less safe and they produced much more nasty exhaust especially on lead petrol, I for one much prefer being able to breathe clean air.
