I'd love along the A64 corridor, but I recognised a long time ago that was completely unrealistic. Tadcaster is cheaper than Boston Spa, but not to the extent that I can afford anywhere.
My point about being already on the ladder, is that although the high prices do affect, the affect is cushioned by the increased value of your house.
Where as I have to find in one form or another 100% of any house I buy.
My current think is building a house, but it appears I'm too late for that aswell, as plots of land are starting reach silly levels. And ofcourse the whole thing is one big minefield.
I do think the problem is also exagerated by a change in living style, I like a lot of my friends am single. This means we occupy twice as many houses, but we also have half the income to spend on the houses, hence getting a mortgage is nigh on impossible. Actually the banks are prepared to lend me far more than I'm prepared to comit to paying every month, but then maybe I'm too sensible.
Bush Tucker Man:
I think you've got in a nut-shell there.
I know what you mean about fashionable locations.
I saw one with approximately the same accomodation as ours, but less garden & on-street parking when I was in Oakwood (Roundhay, Leeds) the other week.
That was in the agents window at about £550,000!!! (well over twice what we paid)
I'll admit I'd prefer to live somewhere like Sherburn in Elmet, Hillam, Aberford than where we do, but as you say the prices
(that's let alone wanting to live up near Hawes, or Richmond)
I wish ours still had its original Victorian gardens :D
It was (& the neighbours, according to the deeds) built by the owners of the local Brickworks as, basically, a Showhouse for his bricks & builders.
The gardens originally ran for over 300yards  down to a farm (as it was at the time)

Oakwood is just down the road from me now, I'm currently back with the parents just up the A58 outside the ring road, while I invest in some more Land Rovers, sorry I mean save a larger deposit :D
Just down the road from us, (corner of A58 and Coal Road), there is the old telephone exchange, which has been bought and converted into some ramshackle stables, for a long time it went unused, and I thought it could be extended into a resonable 2 bedroom house if you could get a little land from the farmer. They sold it Auction and I never heard about it :x

I know the one.
Last week I photographed a house just around the corner from you (on the ring-road)
I suppose you'll know the building in the previous photo as well then?
Bush Tucker Man:
Whilst on th subject of Leeds, I've often thought that this would make an impressive entrance for a house
