Going Nowhere Fast
« on: April 22, 2005, 21:38:05 »
I've come to the momentous decision I need to get fit again!

After almost 3years of not touching the bikes I had my Dyna-Tech out & on the 'Turbo-Trainer' out in the sun today.
They've just stood there since we moved, in fact moving houses is the most miles they've done in all that time.

When I was racing (circa 1993 - 1997), plus daily commuting, I thought nothing of knocking off a hilly 80mile ride. Then I gave up for a while.
I started again in 2002(?) after having reached almost 12 Stone , plus that fcat that Lance Armstrong could win the Tour de France multiple times after having overcome such strong odds (re; his Cancer)
I went for it 'big time'.
No chocolate, chips, fried food, cake!!
In under3 months I dropped from 12 Stone to 9 Stone & could practically sprint up hills like Holm-Moss

Now I need to do it again
Can I do it?

So tyres pumped up to 120psi, a proper pair of shorts & my Sidis on.
Oakleys onstand-by incase it got too bright in the garden.

A slow start, in bottom gear getting used to the resistance of the 'Turbo'.
Once I'd reached a cadence of about 90rpm, it wasn't too bad.
Some 'music of choice' on the tape player in the workshop & the door open.
I spent 45minutes pedalling away, just think I used to be able to get to the top-side of Leeds in that time before.

Will I continue to follow the path I've set off on again?
Time will tell

Having spent 2 yrs on my behind operating machinery and no walking I too am thinking af getting a bike of sorts to get me out and about.
Thinking more of a mountain type and slower speeds myself.
Gone from 16st to 17 1/2st so need to do something.
I'm not planning on wearing anything like the above though.

Sold mine ages ago, considering buying another (if I get fit again)
No plans to race them again though.
Dust Bowl

Not interested in these poncy Full-Suspension' types though. The frame geometry makes them damn hard work up hill (unless you buy a really 'top-line'), plus the added weight of the shocks & swing-arm don't endear them to me

NO!

This one THIS ONE!!!!!

Oh, & if anyone's wondering about the yellow wristbands that are now a common sight.
Wonder how many wearers know the story behind them?

I keep saying "this year I'm going to start cycling again" I used to be mad for it but as my friends have moved away and settled down......
I've no motivation you see, I love mountain biking (though I'm not brave enough to road-bike anymore) but I like to get out-and-about with friends.

Now if I could teach Max to run alongside my bike.........

Even now after about 8years my right shoulder still siezes up at times, or in certain planes of movement.

No I enjoyed mixing it with the traffic. I always made sure I postioned myself to my best advantage (read; safety) on a difficult bit of road. I'd take a central line through a corner, or when approaching a roundabout. I would always acknowledge the drivers behind me though with a 'thankyou' wave.
After all commuting home from Leeds around 18:00hrs  for several years made you traffic-wary.

Jack used to run around the rugby club field behind where we used to live when I used it for a bit of training.
I'd practice my starts & dismount/remounts (where you swing a leg over , step off, picking the bike up - without stopping. Then run & jump straight into the saddle) for the Cyclo-Cross & Mountain Bike Racing.

I'd set him off & sprint after him trying to beat him down a side of the pitch, he'd invariably cheat by cutting a corner

To date I have cycled into:
A tree
A market stall (playing 'tiggy off the ground')
A hedge
A bombhole
The floor, on more ocassions than I care to admit.

I think that now it's only my right arm that still works the way God intended, the rest of me seems to have gained musical accompanyment.  I hear sickening noises when walking about with ear-defenders on.

Hang on, did I say I used to enjoy this?
