OverHeating AGAIN
« on: May 31, 2010, 07:33:08 »
Morning guys can anyone suggest anything else i can do now to stop my 300tdi from trying to cook itself on Fast Roads?

Im finding that now I cannot do more than 20 Miles at cruising speeds of 60 b4 the gauge decides it wants to go through the roof the only way I have to cool it is to open up the heaters at maxium and back right off the throttle and limp home needless to say this is getting very annoying..

It has no issues with running about town and sitting for hours upon end in traffic needle never moves but as i say ask the thing to actually cruise and it eint playing ball

The Disco has always had issues with running hot since ive had it on motorway journeys and last year on the way down to L2B run it blew the headgasket and made a terrible mess of the head and my wallet was hit hard

So to cure the problem i have done...

1 Brand new shiney Headgasket with all the trimmings
2 Removed Intercooler flushed through with Parafin and cleaned out
3 Flushed Rad through completely
4 New Water Pump

theres no signs of water ingress in the oil or anything like that (mind u there wasnt the last time it went pop)

The Visc fan admitidly doesnt look like its in best of health and could do with swapping maybe a kenlow could do summat?

Any Ideas would be Great thanks for looking Keith

I had a very similar problem which turned out that some one had put the thernostat in upside down. theres a small hole in the thernostat this should be positioned at the top so any air can get out.

With anything that starts to over heat I take the thermostat out and run with out it in it's not ideal but it rules it out

Is the radiotor matrix clean i.e. Not full of mud ? Are the fins intact ?
When the engine is warm check for viscous fan - it should be very difficult to turn, if it spins easily by hand it's goosed, although  airflow At speed is normally enough to cool the engine. Without seeing it my guess would be new radiator required.

I'd go with the radiator being goosed too, my old 300 used to to overheat as you describe but only on long hills, the bottom of the rad was gunged up with mud and quite a few fins were missing.
There's also a theory that the viscous only does the cooling up to ~35mph as over that speed it's the airflow through the rad that does the cooling, not the viscous pulling the air through.
Have you tried giving it a bleed in case there's any air in the system?

We did bleed it last when the water pump was changed, im pretty confident thats fine, the rad seems ok with no fins missing etc but i see what u say about the bottom could be gunged up

ill source a new rad then and try that on the old gal thanks for your help :)

I know a guy who had masses of grief with overheating, new head, rad the lot.  Turned out he had a V8 fan blade on the TDi viscous hub, when t got hot and locked up it blew harder, forcing the hot air back into the rad.

Worth checking

Buy I'd agree, having tried radflush on my LSE, it makes no difference so I fitted a new rad and viscous hub, job jobbed

When my 300tdi cooked I replaced it and then suddenly 10 days later the new one wanted to cook. Landrover specialist  I bought it from said you can flush a 300tdi rad for ever and a day and it will remain blocked but still pass clear water. I let him fault find and replace rad and it was sorted. Rad is not normally used in the cooling of engine on a 300tdi - hence I could drive around for 10 days perfectly okay but when powering up a very long gradual hill (past city of Bath) the thermostat opened and needed the cooling of the rad- when that cooling wasn't there the temp reached for the red.

Yep,I had the same problem last winter.Long uphill, rad blew steam and water everywhere.I thougt it could be the head gasket !
The p gasket was leaking and I think the previous owner had put a rad turd in it to seal it. Anyway, spotted split in it as well,so I replaced it and has been fine ever since. New rads dont cost much more than £100 I think.

No need to be sorry, the serpentine V8 fitted to the soft-dash and 300 series Disco had the fan running the other way, the hub is RH thread rather than LH thread and has a different (smaller I think) nut to distinguish the fact.  Anyway, the outside of the viscous hub is the same so it is possible to bolt the fan moulding from one onto the other.

The blades face the other way but it isn't obvious with the fan shroud in place.

I too have been having overheating issues with my Discovery in the last couple of years since it done the head on the way back from a caravan holiday in Cornwall.

I had the head replaced after it was skimmed by a friend and still failed. I now have a genuine water pump and thermostat fitted earlier this year. But when I tow the van it starts to overheat after about an hour and a half of towing! i found that if I put the heating on full with the fan on and reduced my speed below 50mph the gauge would start to drop back to its normal position. So after reading this thread, im wondering if a new radiator would cure my issues?

Also, I have noticed that my Discovery black smokes more since the head was replaced. Could this be be related or am I just getting paranoid!!

Any additional info would be greatly received.

Many thanks,

Sogster.

Keith... have lost your phone number...

Lurch's comment about mud twixt the aircon rad and main rad is most appropriate - had a few issues with overheating following Billing last year and thought that I had hosed everything out until I went to clean the intercooler.

At that point I ended up with more mud on the drive than had come of the chassis and wheelarches combined... it was everywhere...

How could I get that much mud out of such a small and confined space?

Niki wasn't quite so polite in her summing up of the state of our drive - it involved a comparison with the Somme and some 'fairly robust English...'

Hope this helps

hi guys been folloing this for a few days now, i also have heating issues,
i have a 93 200tdi
the engine was rebuilt by the last owner who seems to have done a good job. if i use it around town then its fine but on a long run say 30 + miles the guage is nearly in the red and fri the temp warning light was on so i put the heater on and reduced my speed to under 50 to bring it back down,

im running lift and 265/75/16 tyres and thought it might be the big wheels causing it to get hot, the standard viscus fan has been removed and a keenlow draw fan installed.

after reading this the other day i fitted a new thermostate saturday and used the disco last night and it was no better.
the rad looks in good nick and i have flushed the rad and added freash coolant,

im thinking of buying a new rad now to see if that makes a difference.

The radiator can look good on the outside but be full of sludge on the inside,

Mine was so full of sludge that it took two people to lift out

Did your mate clean anything whilst it was apart or re-route any breathers?
or fit a EGR blank kit?

Do you know which head gakste he fitted? it's possible the compression ratio has been lowered resulting in a lower combustion temperature

Or you just notice it more :?

im getting similar issues went to portsmouth from salisbury had to cruise at 50mph with heaters on to keep just above half way i then flushed the outside rad it had mud straw and what other it had there, then went to epsom from salisbury and it sat at halfway at 60mph so slight improvement but still cant do 70mph, my dad suggested and i might do it is to get twin elec fans and convert it from viscous. may solve the issue?

*if* those fans work surely it would only be hiding the fact there is something wrong. The standard cooling from factory is said to be more than adequate for the job in the hottest of climates. The rad issues discussed in this thread seem to be mostly concerning internal blockage of the radiator be it from contamination from additives such as 'cure leak', sedative build from component/coolant corrosion or just fin closure from damage or age and that internal flushing of the rad (in my case the 300tdi defender) does not clear any blockages due to its design.

After speaking to an installation engineer at kenlowe I didn't fit my LSE with electric fans, they can shift only about half the air that a decent viscous can.

At the time I thought I had a decent rad too so the engineer suggested i replace the visocu hub, it made a massive difference to how the fan runs but TBH the guy I bought the viscous from offered me such a good deal ona new rad I swapped both.

This is starting to sound like the old thermostat thing again. One of my 200s never had one in since i rebuilt it a few years ago but after that -10 cold stuff a soon put one in,BUT since the weather has got better it frys its brains off so out it came.I could cruise at 50 but soon as the turbo started producing the heat ,off it went.I can now thrash the ass off her ,get her hot and the heat just goes down, and i have no fan either! Thermostats just restrict the flow .
