the zf box if it is from a disco2 or p38a is not compatable with the earlier cars as it has a electronic control. also the box will be valved for the v8 not a diesel so it will be valved wrong i would have stuck with a manual.
possible fault with box is the torque convertor not installed properly and you have crushed the oil pump box fubar

The loud clunk was the drive dog on the oil pump breaking, another box required or someone to change the pump.

The pump is in the nose of the gearbox, I'm told you can strip the bellhousing to get at the pump but I've never tried it.

thats assuming the box wasnt from a diesel, also EH box's can soon be made to work the old fashioned way  ;)

Tell us how mate, I've toyed with fitting a later box, from a 4.6.  Can you use the electric shift?

why do you want to fit that later box pal ?
if your going to upgrade, go to the 24 version but put it on manual valve block
im running compushift on my EH box in the comp truck and its amazing. i can control the what the gearbox does at the push of a button

the electronic box has only one good thing oil pump and first gear mated to a lse auto and you have  avery strong box as i have fitted to my classic.
as for the electronic to manual yes can be done but i would fit one and make a electronic shifter box which a good friend of mine has done to his classic with a jag supercharged v8

all the 4hp22 box's are the same its the 4hp24's that are different with double the amount of drive pegs on the A clutch basket or like you say 1st gear
not all leccy boxs are the 24 variant...mine wasnt until i smashed it to bits.
i rebuilt it then to the same build as the "hd ashcroft " version

why do you want to fit that later box pal ?

Because my LSE has mashed it's box, I've been looking at ashcrift's website because they offer upgrades using parts of the hp24, but mine has bust the torque converter which requires about a grand's worth of recon box with upgrades before you can fit the biger 4.6 TC

Then there's things I've heard recently about their after-sales service :-.

I also fancy converting to a flappy-paddle type of box if that's possible.

If/when I get my golden hello I hope I'll have some money to fix the LSE and get it back on the road [-o<

Thanks.  I know the 4hp24 is a big longer, or the stage 2 Ashcroft box which sounds a bit like what you did with yours.
