Ironically planes could fly over British airspace en route to other European countries while our airports where closed, they had to be over 20000 foot.

That must have been frustrating.

That picture brings it home, I remember as kids it was a big thing to see a vapour trail in the sky, now you notice when there are not any in the sky.

All this should bring the home holiday market up to speed  ;)

That's an amazing picture.... I assume it's not normally as bad as that? All the airlines will be rushing their aircraft around to get them back to where they are meant to be.

Still not too much activity over Norfolk..... but then, there isn't much anyway. We tend to get more military traffic than civilian.

To be honest the post is a bit of propaganda ( below the posted photo are the words "library image" rather small). I noted the lovely clear sky yesterday when out on Salisbury plain and this morning we noticed straight away a dozen contrails carving up the skies. I just grabbed a random contrail image off google for purposes of illustration (photo carried a label of " The picture shows the sky south of Lancaster full of contrails at 8-30am on 19/12/2002 (Phil Leigh, Weather, July 2003) ")  ;)

I know the ferry industry is doing well from it - apparently sailings to Portsmouth were jam-packed to the extent that people couldn't get down to the car decks due to piles of luggage in the way (presumably rescued air travellers who didn't understand why hordes of people were trying to go below decks just as they docked)! Can but hope that some of the air refugees think about driving to Dover or catching a Eurostar next time they want to go to Paris.
