Im convinced ive bought a jinx
« on: February 25, 2010, 23:31:01 »
Been looking around wanting to get something 4x4 to get up the farm track to see to my horse, and also pull a trailer and I went for a Mitsubishi Shogun Sport 2.5td on a 51plate . . . . . dont get me wrong I think the car is really nice and planning to upgrade to a newer one (probably sooner than i realise if things keep going the way they are) but litereally since driving away from the garage its just a jinx. The engine management light was on twice in 20 mins of getting it, fan belt sqeeking, 4 wheel drive light flashing, the service history wasnt in the car and interior lights not working, i know these are all small (ish) things but didnt give me much faith so back to garage it went still under warrenty to be fixed, came back and everything back to normal i hoped, but the 4 wheel drive light is flashing again belt still making a noise and now the abs light has come on . . . . . great. Ive also decided that i would like a new cam belt on it to stay on the safe side and new glow plugs its a bit of a slug to start. Getting mixed reviews some people say sent it back and others are saying to me oh it will just be teething problems and not to worry but feel really disheartened and slightly regretting getting rid of my reliable car for something that just feels like its gonna be a big garage bill. I dont wanna go back to the garage even tho car still under there warrenty, i dont trust them and they seem like a wheeler dealer and since its already been back they havnt done a good job of it, argh sorry for the long winded moan!!!!!!

My 2cents:

Take it back to the garage and demand a refund. Then go somewhere else and get a Discovery :D

No, serioously, if they can't repair it in a satisfactory way, you are entitled to a refund. The vehicle (as any other purchase) has to be fit for purpose. So go back, get them to repair it, and if they can't, demand your money back.

Pop down to CAB, get a couple of print outs from them, go down to the garage and speak to the manager, not a sales guy, and just explain that there's a couple of niggles which need sorting, which his guys have fixed, but it turns out that a couple of other things have cropped up in the process...

If he's funny, tell him you've spoken to CAB and they've given you a little light reading. You <really> don't want to go down that route, see how quickly he gets the car off you and into the garage.  You might get the cam belt thrown in FOC.

I seem to only be able to buy jinxed cars too except for my rover 620 I bought of my Dad and kept for 10.5 years. I decided in April last year to chop both cars in and get 1 much newer car to reduce costs. That had niggly things that Ford wouldnt do under warranty. The independant garage I bought it from 200ish miles away were brilliant. They sent a guy down to collect my car, took it away, made Ford mend all the bits under warranty then dropped the car back to me. Fab service. They even paid over £200 for new key fobs and keys as it only came with 1 set of keys.

But then again another friend had a Galaxy that had 3 engine rebuilds and new turbos, etc etc etc and although he got it all done in the end and the garage he got it from were rubbish as he had to tell them what was wrong (my friend did end up with loads of new parts that werent needed so nearly a totaly new drive train!!!) it took him alot of arguing to get it done. He loves the car now.

But on another note, a friend bought a shogun and the engine caught fire 30miles after leaving the garage. Garage refused to have any dealing with it and he has had to fork out for a new engine. I wouldnt have done that personally, 30miles from leaving a showroom (it is an old shogun though) it shouldnt have caught fire. It came with no warranty.

I would go back and kick up a stink or ask for money back. The warranty given, is it one of these ones you can buy from a company? If yes, maybe you dont need to go back to the garage you got it from to get it mended. Ask /  tell them you will go to an independant garage or maybe get an AA or RAC check done to it?

Not  possible, ever dealer is responsible for a vehicle breaking down that quick the law offers the buyer that security!

As above, unless it's bought 'trade' it comes under the sales of goods act.  2nd hand cars aren't exempt.

It's a lemon, reject it NOW, you are within your rights and if you have, in good faith, alowed them to fix it and they havn't then they don't have much of a leg to stand on.  Contact trading standards and if needs be I know a good solicitor who work no win no fee.

Thanks for all the comments, well the car went back to the garage under warrenty as 4 wheel drive light flashing (they though it was a switch under the gearbox that was faulty) the ABS light is back on. I contacted garage fri to see if car was ready for collection, it was i asked what had been the problem but got no reply. When I picked the car up i found they had it for 3 days and it had nothing done to it, he wasnt prepared to move the gearbox to fix the switch and the abs light had not come on while it was with them, so nothing was done. To say i was furious was an understatement (plus havin to put up with a death trap courtesy car) so at the end of my rope contacted garage and said wasnt happy car not fit for purpose and as described i wanted full refund, got a point blank no. So tomorrow off to trading standards I go!!
