rear diff mystery!!!???
« on: January 18, 2010, 21:13:36 »
I lost all drive on the rear axle and suspected a half shaft, i took them both out and they are fine, so must be the diff...but! when i put the shafts back in and pull them out loose by half an inch the diff works fine and the shafts seem to bite, i'm having trouble getting my head around this as if they bite when half an inch out why not when fully in. Just wondering why before i strip the diff. many thanks in advance  kev

Put diff lock in,if it works then your transfer box is stuffed!

that doesnt make sense as the transfer box has nothing to do with the rear diff aslong as it provides a turning prop shaft which it does so the transfer box works fine

Its called elimination,it rules out transfer box problems.Cant be bothered to explain how they work if you dont know.If you put diff lock in and there is no power to either axle, then the box is stuffed. If both axles have power then your diff is stuffed, something could have come a drift.

24 spline or 10 spline?

Either way it sounds like your splines are worn out and TBH it's a bigger problem with high-mileage 24 splines than 10s because not only are the splines smaller but they are traingularin section so contact at an angle unlike the 10s.  Splines always wear a little due to the floating nature of the axles, sounds like yours are too far gone.

It was the cross pin one of the gears was in a pile of bits but one was still on the broken cross pin and making contact turning the diff if I pulled the shafts out abit. The only reason I said it didn't make sense was because I know how a diff works and knew the transfer box was fine just could work out how the diff could still turn by pulling the shafts out half inch. I wasnt doubting your expert knowledge I didn't intend any offence clearly that annoyed you. The shafts are 10 spline so that's good. Do you know if the cross pin and gear if replaced are a good fix?

You can recon a diff but it aint a 5 min job,it might be easier to just chuck a 2nd hand one in,cost you about £30 max for 10 spine.

this has to be the worst drive train break in history in one go. all at the same time cross pins both front and back have shattered, transfer box went as did the auto box sprag clutch. autobox and transfer box done them last weekend both diffs stripped ready to fit the replacements, all half shafts look good no wear at all suprisingly. good job i got a socket set for christmas (halfords prossional=rather impressed with it). front and rear diffs look identical is this the case???. plus park doesnt seem to hold, would that be the parking prawl??

Both diffs are the same, just an extra bracket bolted on the front for the steering damper  ;)
