P38 Gearbox fault
« on: December 28, 2009, 14:18:40 »
My dads Range Rover P38 has developed a fault with the Gearbox,

it brings up an error on the dash, and wont pull away in D, to get it to move you need to select 1 then you have to change to 2 once moving then into 3 at about 25 MPH and then you can put it in to D at about 30 - 35 MPH. and it wont change in to low box at all

i suspect it is an Electrical fault

i have put it on a couple of diagnostic equipment's at work (Snap-on / Bosch and another), but it doesnt show any faults, have checked the fluid level which is fine, and the engine runs sweet as a nut,

is there any common faults i should be looking for??

i know it may sound daft but check the battery and charge rate, mine kept throwing gearbox faults and misbehaving in general. my battery was at something like 11.7 volts, new bat and service of the alternator and no issues since. touch wood

cheers, will check that,

spoke to ashcroft transmissions and they said it is most likley the spag clutch inside the gearbox, but thats going to be £££ to fix,

atleast a battery is only a few quid

checked the battery and with no load it sits a 12.20 V, with the engine running and no load its 13.82 V and with load (lights, heater) it dropped to 12.80 V

would this say the alternator is caput??

Do the Diognostics you used cover all the RR specific stuff?

Maybe its worth trying a LR diognostics system?
