More tyre Q's
« on: December 08, 2009, 22:00:30 »
Hi all,
Ive tried searching but my computer has decided it doesn't want me to do things that way.....
Anyways, i know this subject has been done to death but help would be appreciated.
Ive got a bone stock Dico 300tdi, and am looking to tweak it a little and first up will be a snorkel and tyres. After speaking to a lad at work today(who's no idiot or newbie), he does pay n play and lanes around by me etc etc. He said i would be better off going for muds instead of AT's (BFGs to be specific) as i would be getting stuck a bit around by me. Bearing in mind i use her as my daily driver, would a set of mildly aggressive muds be the answer or stick with the BFG choice? Would it also be worth the extra money getting some 235/85/16's for a little bit more ground clearance?

Something like this maybe??

Edit: Now my computers stopped messing around grabber AT2?

Thanks in advance

John

Tyre choice really comes down to too many things for advice to mean much!

Personally speaking, I believe BFG tyres to be over priced! There are other great tyres out there at a lot less money!

If you are using it as a daily driver, then you will go through a set of muds quicker than most, avoid the ones that are on the more extreme end of huge lugs, they are noisy and will fall apart with lots of road use.

Also I would avoid remoulds, they wear catastrophically fast in Mud Terrain guise.

Cooper do the STT which is what I run, great tyres, rarely get stuck and only if running road pressures!

I also have mates that use the ST which again are great tyres and it needs to be really deep mud to stop them! They tend to go most places I do on the muds, a great AT pattern.

KL71's also get a good write up, coming equal 1st with BFG muds in a back to back magazine test. I discounted these because they are directional tyres, so possibly leaving you with a spare facing the wrong way!

235.85's will fit a Discovery BUT!!! Your suspension needs to be top notch! otherwise a 2 inch lift is recommended. Also you may need to "camel cut" the rear panels depending on your wheels.

I run a 200Tdi with new suspension (not a lift) and 235.85R16's on Discovery steel rims. They do foul the radius arms on full lock but even on full articulation off road I have not ripped my rear wings apart as I have seen some do, usually because their suspension is tired or they have bigger offset wheels.

shame its Budda!!

I've  had a set of 15/31/10.5 BFG mud tyres and 15/33/12.6 Kuhmo KL71 mud tyres and both are excellent tyres. I did around 10,000 miles on the BFG's and they showed hardy any sign of wear at all. Changed them for the bigger KL71's which were also great. With both of these I didn't really notice any increase in road noise from road tyres.
Currently have Insa turbo special tracks (265's). Great off road tyre but I find these very noise on the road.

BFG's are way overpriced, I'd put some KL71's on it.

Do a camel cut and maybe put some spacer cups on to lift it a bit. Job done.
