Auto box problem following engine swap

Having swapped engines (last one sheared the crank pulley bolt and snapped the timing chain!!) and got the new one to fire up there is a problem.

Unfortunatly we seem to have a problem with the gearbox now and suspect that we have broken something along the way as there is no drive!!  

When we first started to tighten up the bell housing bolts a loud bang was heard. Our initial thoughts were that it was just the spigots clicking into place. The sound was (or so we think) from the bellhousing area as it did seem to echo! When the engine was bolted in we started to set the distributor (old one was suspect so swapped for the original from my Rangie). This is where we discovered our first problem. The engine would not turn over and it was not a locked and it was not an engaged starter motor. The bell housiong bolts were all loosened off and the engine turned over OK. Bolts retightened and all still seemed fine. Bits and bobs put back together, timing set, key turned and hey presto engine fired first time.

Whilst checking for fluid leaks the gearbox was topped up and as one should we ran the box through the gears but there was no movement of the truck! No linkage was disturbed, as far as we know!

So, bearing in mind engine swap, the bang from somewhere in or near to the bell housing and a lack of drive does anyone have any idea's what may be wrong or any solutions?

Sounds to me that you have broken the two lugs off the gearbox pump, i take it you left the torque converter on the engine when you replaced it.

Err yes, we did leave the torque converter on when we took the engine out!  :oops:

That's that then.  There are 3 things you need to engage the torque converter into when you replace it, it should always go with the gearbox and be left in place if possible.

The pump is buried inside the box, so it's new box time I'm afraid.
