I'd agree, from what I know of them. I tried a new L200 at the NEC towing a mid-sized Bailey (and that was stripped out too) and was seriously underwhelmed at the lack of power. Be prepared to do plenty of cog stirring.
Finest towcar I've ever had is sat outside, albeit untaxed. This moring I saw 3 RRC all towing on the m1/m18 within less than 5 minutes. Made I smile :D There's still very little ont he road to touch one for towing performance, other than a new RR of course ;)
As a guide my sister's RRC can do 30mpg solo and 21mpg towing a 1300kg van to Wales. Its a 300 TDi auto, fully loaded. Probably not ideal if you want it for work though.
My mate has an older Ranger, the last one with the mechanical fuel system, it does well into the mid 30s mpg, he's had it tweaked with big ibtercooler and it tows old RRC nicely. If I wante3d a double-cab or pickup that's what I'd look at first.
