CLASSIC BRAKE OVERHAUL ?
« on: April 05, 2005, 20:31:41 »
Hi all.

My 1988 3.5 E.F.I  will be having a complete front and rear brake job in the next few weeks.
The M.O.T tester put it down as an advise a couple of weeks ago, so the parts are on order and I will be doing it myself.

Any tips ?  Any short cuts ?  Do I need the swear box ?.

Front and rear discs, plus pads.

Any help will be grateful, as I have never done one, and the Haynes manual tells lies

Cheers,

SPIKEY.

That shows the pad change...  not the whole job, but a part of it.

Cheers Tim.

I was more concerned about the discs, as part of the hub has to come off first, judging by the Disco I have just been working on.

Take the caliper off, take the shaft end out.
Undo the hub nuts and slide the whole disc / hub off the stub axle.

In the back of the disc, there are a nuber of bolts..  take these out and separate the disc from the hub.  (I use a rubber mallet)

Refitting is the reverse.... etc.

check the pistons in the calipers are not corroded, if they are when you push them back into the caliper they make the seals leak, i have had to replace pistons on 2 previous vehicles because of this and it looks like i have got to do it on my v8 now as well although the idea of exchange calipers is appealing

If the disc's haven't been seperated from the hub's for some time a press may be easier
How are the wheel bearings? Probably worth getting a couple of kits ready just in case too, if the existing one's are ok just regrease them.
Might be worth getting new lockwashers to replace the one's you're taking off.
Plenty of copperslip too
RTV or gaskets for putting the halfshafts back on.

Thanks for the replies, Neil and Chris.

Some-one did mention a press to me.

I think a general overhaul is due on the Range.
One thing that puzzles me is that the new rear shocks have only been on for a few months, but the top bushes have worn out ( after a few off - road trips ).

Has any-one got any tips for fixing a rear diff casing leak ?
At the moment it is only a dribble, and the breather is clear.

Cheers,

If you can't get the old disks off I sometimes cut almost through them with special tool #2 (angle grinder) and then split them with a cold chisel (the violence suppliments the swearing) because I only have the 'intermitant gravity press' available at home (special tool #1, a BFH).  Swapping the disks is the easy part, provided you get them back on without any significant run-out (out of true) in the disk, but I HATE re-rubbering the callipers.  I have new SS pistons but even when I can get the wiper retainers to fit (the Britpart ones don't) they stay in for about a month, what a s**t peice of design.

Yes I was going down that path with leaky piston seals, stripped it but had to give up, the bores were that ban nothing would do the job, huts when you have to get a replacement caliper though, good thing was paddocks re-imbursed me for the unused piston kit, so not wasted the money down that path as well

When I first bought my Range Rover it had a leaking diff pan . After investigation I decided that it was too fragile to weld so I cleaned it up and used metal putty thishas sealed it and I have not had any problems since
When all the oil has drained out the leak stops.

If you can pick up a spare one or set of hubs, you can refurb them/it in advance and just swap the units over, keeps the vehicle on the road and useable

just resealed my calipers over the weekend and knowing the trouble i had last time with the wiper seal retainers   i cheated and left them in place and hooked the seal out with an o ring pick then carefully fitted the new ones in place after cleaning out the groove, all seems to be working at the mo no problem :D
