Towing a Sankey trailer + one more ?
« on: September 11, 2009, 17:39:56 »
I have Two Sankey trailers, ones a Cooks outfit and the other is a Racal.

The cooks one has been modified to fit a normal 50mm ball, whicle the racal one has the NATO ring.

If i put a HATO hitch on the back of the Sankey cooks trailer, could i add the racal traler and tow that as well ?

Has anyone done this and not been pulled over for questions ?

Il post up pics of the modified Cooks trailer after the weekend, its been a 1 weeks project, and will be cooking burgers for family and friends this weekend at Sandringham.

I don't know about the legal side of it, but reversing would be interesting!

Dunno about that but try and take a caravan  and a trailer down the motorway and see if the Dibble pull you over.
I dont recall ever seeing fairground folk towing more than one trailer even in Wales where they are a lot more open minded than other places !!
If it was legal dont you think it would be common place to see something along the lines of Australian road trains....

It isnt illegal as far as i know, regularly tow 2 14t beet trailers behiend my tractor, never had a problem.
Even towed 2 ifor livestock trailers behiend the 90.
Reversing is easy with twin trailers, you just have to think about it a bit more than reversing with a single trailer, it is just practice lol

I have searched the net and havent found much info
You can tow more than one trailer with a tractor upto a total weight of 24 tonnes, the only other info i found was dated 2007

Towing more than one trailer used to the only requirement in Uk regulations that stated the vehicle must be LHD.If the towing vehicle had only a driver,it had to be LHD.If RHD it had to have an observer as well-this was presumably to avoid pedestrians being caught up by one of the latter trailers. You still see fairs/circuses towing these trailers

It's the same in effect as towing a 4 wheel trailer with a bogey front axle isn't it?

Both trailers would need to have operational brakes due to the weight of 2 sankeys being over 750 (or bloody close too)

You might need long vehicle signs, but a call to the dvla or vosa is probably worth it.

How difficult would it be to make a couple of sockets under eash trailer front and back and slide some 50x50 box and pin it in place. Take off the front wheels and have a rod which operates the rear trailers brakes.  Would be ugly as sin, but technically it would only be 1 trailer.

Well, im still not sure,  Both the Sankey trailers are braked,  total length would not be any longer than a large car transporter.

Sankeys, like many military trailers are set up to allow tandem towing. However, this is only done in a tactical situation (i.e. the plod have all run away!) where the only guys in uniforms different from Tommy Squaddie are the bad guys!

Don't think it's legeal on the public highway. If it was legel, you'd see far more caravan users who's car has died, towed behind a bog standard recovery vehicle. Instead... the car is on a flatbed towing the caravan.

I would say it is illegal except if you have a showmans license like a circus, or a farmer on an agrcultural license or a recovery driver recovering an artic lorry.

I dont think you can come under any of these unless you class selling burgers as showmans? Ya never know!  ;)

definitely illegal to tow more than one trailer on the public road unless you are a showman.

even if you have driven passed police cars/police persons and not been stopped it doesn't make it legal!

by rights farmers are only meant to tow multiple trailers if both are empty or one is an implement and the other is not.

I met a bloke at a sodbury sortout that was towing two sankeys full of bits and he told me you can pull two trailers at the same time as long as you dont exceed 30mph. Not 100% sure of the legalities but MOD definately tow two at a time in vehicle depots because i have done it myself at Ashchurch.
