knocking when brakeing ??? transfer gearbog bearing ?? disco 200tdi
stretchy:
alrite guys got a rite mind puzzler... my brakes make a knocking noise when breaking, it sounds more or less like if you had no bushes in your hocky stick/radius arm when breaking.
I have been under there a few times today and cant fined anything. thers new pollybushes in the hocky sticks, shoks a springs are tight theres no play in the track rod ends or drop arm the front prop shaft is a recon one with only one new uj but the other one seems sweet and the wheel bearing is new.
I have however discoverd that my transfer box flange where you atach the front prop is a bit rocky. if you turn the prop you can here knocking in the transfer box and you can move it side to side just a little. is it fubar? Is there anything els I can try ?
given this the disco is runing realy well and moves through the gears and low box with no truble at all witch is why im so puzled
any ideas??
thanks guys

Range Rover Blues:
Rotational backlash in the transmission is not just expected it is neccesary, don't worry about a small amount.
If you can just feel a bit of sideways play don't worry about that either.
Check the brake pads are secure and not loose or tight.
Check you wheel bearing now that you've driven a few miles too, also check for anything fouling the brake callipers if the bearings have been disturbed

just say if there was to much play in the transfer box is there a bearing I can change to sort it out??.
also if the brake pistons are jaming or something is it safe to wd40 them to free them up a bit ??
Range Rover Blues:
If pistons are jammed then the outer seal has failed and the piston has rusted through the chrome surface, WD40 won't really help.
You can change to output shaft bearings on the LT230 IIRC.
