knocking when brakeing ??? transfer gearbog bearing ?? disco 200tdi
clover:
I don't think its the brakes. I think its transmission related. The front wheel was making a noise when you drove forward and it sounded like it was coming from the drive-shaft. I think you have a sloppy differential. But it may be just a problem further along being transfered thought to the shafts.
I be more worried about the noise coming from inside the transfer box when you wiggled the prop-shaft as it was decidedly unhealthy. Also the transmission brake was red hot don't know if that is normal either.
I know a bit of slack in the drive train is normal but I think the noise its making sounds terminal. If it was the front bearing it would be leaking oil out the seal. Is that where the oil is coming from? It could have run dry of oil I suppose. Undo the bottom plug and see what comes out!
I'll lend you what EP90 I have but it might not be enough.

We drained the T-box and got 2 pints of muddy colored gulp out of it. Not healthy I'd say but not burnt like I expected.

spent mostly all day checking brakes, calipers, wheel bearings, ujs tbox, still couldnt fined anything. when I got home I dicided to take of the front prop just to make sure it was definitly comeing from the front axle area and sure enuf it was still clonking. the only thing I could feel was a bit lose was the pan hard rod and as I had some bushes for this anyway I thort I may as well change them. The bolts was realy seized and couldent get one of them out even with a lump hammer so had to cut it aparantly the bolts thease size are realy hard to come by so try and keep them in tact If you can help it. I had to go to 4 garages to get one but atleast it was free :) presed in the new bushes and evrything was fine. put my new recon front prop on to and renewed the t box oil and all seems fine now. I will see how it goes.
big thanks for your help guys
