jimny transfer box change
« on: July 18, 2009, 10:46:10 »
hey guys im pretty new to this site but i just wanna say i love it!
This was the one place that i used to find out my jimny wobble problems which turned out to be a set of very rusted and mud packed king pins

I just have a question for u guys i have a 2000 model jimny that i have raised 3 inches and gone up to a 235/75 AT tyres and now as u do i find its a bit of a slug especially when i try to tow the boat, what r ur thoughts of changing the transfer case from the manual transfer case to the case out of a auto jimny i have been informed that the high range ratio in the manual transfer case is 1:1 but the auto is 1:1.3 and that the low range in the manual has a 1:2 and the auto has a 1:2.6 has any one ever thought of doing this out of interest?

Mitch,

I don't believe this is true. I think the transfer boxes are identical. I could be wrong but the document below is based on my research to date.

http://www.bigjimny.com/images/documents/transferboxratios.pdf

Where there are question marks then I am not sure of the information so there is some scope for doubt.

The difference between manuals and autos is achieve through the differential ratios in the axles, not  the transfer boxes.

As far as I know all transfer boxes have the same ratio's upto the latest electronically 'switched' ones, which I think have other mods any way. The diffs are of a lower ratio on the auto's and if you can find a set might help. The other poss mods to reduce ratio's are a Trial Jimny reduction gear set at about £650 (budget for a new hyvo chain as well at £300) or do a SJ Rock lobster conversion - total cost approx £600 - depending where and what you fit. D&G Tuning in Holland do the brackets etc for the conversion. Either way it ain't gonna be cheap and towing a boat will still be hard work.

Best Jimny site is probably http://www.jimny.se/phpbb/index.php?sid=1775d095168c0acb5f8dd9de5403691e
