Waffle boards can vary a lot in length and width. Length is typically between 1m and 1.5m and width around 0.3m. 38mm seems to be a good thickness for general use, though I fancy set of 1.5m long boards in 50mm for bridging larger gaps to complement the 1.2m boards that friends have.
IIRC A friend aquired a pair of 1200x300x38 waffle boards for £20 at a show last year and so far so good.
The "waffle" can be bought in large sheets that half a dozen or more boards could be cut out off.

IIRC we had this debate a while ago, but there are waffles and there are waffles. The majority of cheap ones are made from offcuts of industrial flooring (the big sheets that you can cut several pairs from). Mine are that type, they seem fine although the edges are a little battered after using them on rocky/gravelly stuff. There are also the more expensive ones made specifically for 4x4 use.
It really comes down to what you do with them. Mine probably wouldn't last long on a challenge truck, but I can't justify spending £100 or so on waffles that I've used once or twice at most.
