what to do?

well im going to have my first years no clams in august and i really want to get my self a4x4. i was going to get a hilux but as i have a offroad rrc i might as well get one for the road then use the offroad one for spars.

the only thing is what engine do i get? do i get an LPG 3.5 v8 or a 200tdi which would be more reliable. its all down to the mpg and how unreliable a 3.5 v8 efi or carb on LPG is?

I'm not sure how many TDi range rovers were produced, many I've seen like my farthers are conversions and as a result you are to an extent dependant on how good a job of conversion was done. For example there is a birds nest of EFI wiring loom left at the back of the engine bay and the heater plugs don't work (so what its a TDi). I'm pretty sure that was a 200TDi and it gets comfortably over 30 mpg.

As much as I like my V8 auto RRC, its only real justification is as a toy, despite the occasionaly business use and taking the family on holiday while the TDi is having its sills done. The one diesel 4x4 I can think of that the RRC V8 is better than on road is the 300GD G wagon :lol:

Fuel costs are in favour of LPG over diesel. I get about 28-30 MPG on the 90 and a 35 MPG equivelant with a 3.9 on LPG. Bear in mind I have a light right foot.  :lol:

My personal exprience with lpg rrc is not so good (but the person who had it b4 me was a muppet and didnt do things they should of) but it would not put me off another one (lpg), when driving normaly you will notice the diference on your pocket 49pence per leter sweet run pull like a steam train and very reliable normaly, keep it serviced and if it has not got maginacore ht leads invest in some asap trust me they are worh the expence, and as with all v8 water proof it with a good silicon baised spray or vasaline (it works a little smear round the join on the distribitor but some of the guys on hear will be able to advise you better on water proffing than me) the big ps on this is make shure if under slung tanks they are not coroded as this is exspensive to put right

I find (once set up properly) the engine runs much smoother on LPG, the higher octane rating I guess.

One of the issues with LPG is idealy the spark plugs and timing should be different, so on an LPG + petrol setup its a case of best compromise.

A friend usually runs his carb v8 on LPG all the time and it starts well enough, even if it does take a little more cranking. His petrol tank though is only 8 litres :lol: so running it just on petrol is a pain.


There are various ways of plumbing LPG. The cheapest/easiest is single point with a vaporiser, a multi point injection should be better, but new are around the ££££ mark.

took the new rrc out for a drive today was all seems ok. only  things i noticed are, when you change gear or pull away there seems to be a lot of slack in the back end, i am guessing its the prop or diff, whats the easiest way of testing to find out whats a bit worn? only other thing it seems to be spluttering at low revs and it needs a few revs to get it going like around 2000rpm also it doesn't like driving at anything less that about 2000rpm ( this is all on petrol) it hasn't been driven for a few weeks and its done 15000 miles, is this normal or does it just need a good thrashing and some tweaking?

No, not normal.  First give it a real good ignition system birthday, also checking for collapsed/split breather hoses etc.

If it persists, you may have a gremlin in the flapper EFi system - these are not easy to sort out, but there are guides around that you can work through checking sensors etc.

Another cause of power loss at that sort of mileage is worn out camshaft

I'd start with genuine lucas dizzy cap, rotor arm and leads I think.

As stated, Lucas Cap and rotor.  Magnicor Leads, and some chain wax for a spray around re puddles.  Old inner tumes cut to protect the dizzy is also a good idea.  If you have a simple LPG then make sure the coolant system has no air locks in it.  Top up from the highest point with the heater matrix open.  This will ensure the vapouriser warms up as quick as poss.  I have this simple system and she starts on petrol but with a quick blip of the throttle she's straight on to gas on all bar the coldest of days.  Providing she runs quickly on to gas advance the timing a few degree's as LPG requires longer to burn that petrol. 

But V8 ......... good choice.

well the truck needs a good service and a few patches so i think im going to replace:

spark plugs
HT 8mm leads
dizzy cap
high performance coil
engine oil  filter
gearbox oil
transfer box oil
diff oil
air filter
poly bush kit
braided brake hoses

any one think of anything elts? or anything i wont need?

another thing is it safe to have a 10" sub next to an 80L LPG tank? im just worried about the sound waves and vibrations?

i dont think the air-con will work?


i need to tidy up this up, some of it is factory wires but a lot of rewiring has been done in this truck.

Nothing major for an old beast  ;) looks good overall

Is the most annoying thing the chequer plate pedals or the holey floor   :doh:  :dance:

Looks like a couple of bits of trim missing around the radio  ;) they should tidy it up, Aircon ..... scrap it... the aircon matrix traps mud between it and the rad and causes cooling problems, you cant clean it till you strip it and it could be a long way home  :roll:. keep the fans and use the pump for air compressor  ;)

is the aircon matrix like a mini radiator?

has anyone done this convertioin and have instructions on how to do it or some pictures?

im looking to paint my truck using rollers has any one got any advice on doing that?

The pedals are not my taste, in my job I see too much chequer ;) each to their own  :afro:
The matrix I mean is the HUGH one in front of the rad, take the front grille off and you will see whatt i mean
Many have converted the aircon to compressor and I will be too, there is plenty of info around and i will be searchng again when I have done tthe mot type work.
If you paint your truck try to find coach enamel as it is designed to be brushed/rolled
