i have for one reason and another got a mazda 323 to compliment the disco. it is dull however i keep feeling the urge to play with it to liven it up. things like a k&n panel air filter iridium plugs some fatter stickier tyres and a decent stero. is it worth it?

Peronall I wouldn't on a 323 but if you like it then go for it, it can't make it any worse and it'll make you smile when you drive it  :evil:

it's a hand me down from my old man so liking it is pushing things a bit but given it is only 7 years old and japanese it should be reliable and being a 1.3 it is cheap to run. i guess i'm trying to make me want to drive it as much as i do the disco.

You'll get very little extra go from the mods you describe, and stickier tyres could even make it more boring to drive.  I road rallied a 1 litre Fiesta for many years and had lots of fun on narrow tyres and not much go!
