Correct engine Temp?

Hi all. 

I've just bought a Series III 2.25 petrol (my first series!) 

Bought it on Sunday, welded it on Monday, MOT'd it on Tuesday, Taxed and uinsured it yesterday! :D

My question is this - when I'm stationary or have driven for more than about 10 miles the engine temp goes about 3/4 of the way up - not having a bench-mark from another vehicle to compare temperatures, can anyone tell me if this is the right temp or too hot??

It's fitted with a Kenlowe fan which seems to works fine - it cuts in and out when the engine reaches this temp.  I'm sure it's OK, but could do with some reassurance!!!!!   8-[  8-[  8-[

But thats what the Kenlow does, because the engin runs better at the higher temp.

It should read around the middle in normal conditions.  The electric fan will possibly be causing increased running temperatures.

There are those that also say that having an electric fan with no mechanical fan is not ideal, as it gives the engine "cooling shocks" so to speak.  The engine will get hot, and then the fan kicks in and brings it right back down.  Repeat cycle many a time, and you're going through the warming up and cooling down cycle far more often, in comparison to the mechanical fan.

Yes, mine does the same. They recommend letting the engine run a little hotter than in middle. Mine sits just a smidge below the 3/4 mark. I have an adjustable temp setting on the Kenlowe so can adjust if necessary. The kenlowe doesn't cool the engine right down, just comes on when the engine goes above a set temp, then when it's cooled to that temp it cuts out again.

i.e. It's set for 85 degrees, comes on for a few seconds when the engine hits 86 degrees and cuts out when back down to 85 degrees (arbitary figures)

depends on right foot i can get 16 out of v6 3.0 s111 and 42 out of freelander td4

I'm getting around 14-15mpg on LPG and about 18mpg on Petrol.

That's with a heavy right foot and cruising at 60/65mph

That's similar to what I got when I tried out a sustained high speed run of 65-70mph in mine, with it coming out at 19.4mpg.  The pedal was planted to the floor for periods in order to maintain said speed too.
