Oil leak help - im stuck at work !

(1/3) > >>

tomkbucks:
arse - ive had a slight oil leak under the bonnet ( not using a lot ) but a leak so i cleaned up the block to find out were it was coming from - after an hours drive i could see a small ' bubble ' sort of a mix of air / oil coming from here - were its red... any idea what this is ?

ive also just spotted the rear wheel covered in black oil :( what is this ? is it a seal or something ? i take it i cant drive it - so im stuck at work ! is this a hub seal or something ? its quite thick black oil so does not look like brake fluid

ChrisW70:
1st one looks like rocker cover gasket, not uncommon, 2nd one I agree with your diagnosis - hub seal - get a wheel bearing kit (2 bearings, seal, lock tab washer and drive flange gasket) just in case. Probably need a couple of litres of EP90 to top the axle back up as well.
As for driving it, how far? If it's a few miles home you will probably be ok as you've probably done a few miles to get it into that state already although it usually looks a lot worse than it actually is.

YMMV

is that the right wheel bearing kit ? i actually need to get the front wheel bearing changed so was about to order too.. its an 1998 300TDI non abs,

the oil leak at the top seemst o be coming out of the little injector were it meets the case were circled im not sure its the gasket ?

ive got 40 miles to drive :( so not sure i can drive on it !

tomkbucks:
hum if it is the rear hub oil seal ive been reading around and the axel breathers may be blocked so how do i clear them too ? sorry to ask so many questions in one thread !

you need to remove the breather, it has a banjo fitting and bolt in the top of the axle, next to the diff, undo it, and get an airline blower and blow down the pipe, towards the banjo union with a bit of rag round the banjo so as not to get muck eveywhere, or even lose the banjo, then if the banjo does pop off you will need to blow down the pipe in the end of that to clear that aswell
