changing number plates

WARNING.
I applied to transfer the number from my Series 1 to my Disco (sorry purists!) to get a cheap dateless plate. Both vehicles had to be inspected a DVLA Portsmouth. When inspecting the Series 1, the chassis number could not be identified as a welded patch had been done. I was given 30 days to prove its identity or get a Q plate. I spent hours & hours uncovering axle numbers, researching numbers/dates, etc before I was granted the number.
Check that all numbers recorded on the V5 are visible - Before you go for the inspection.

That's what I plan on doing with my s1 plate, transfer to the Defender before selling the S1 as it's dead money as the plate value is a fair wedge. The S1 would then get a age related plate and seeing it's not a minter/original condition truck then is doesn't matter about the plate.
As for the inspection, good heads up as I know my chassis number is 'unfound', but the inspection is not always carried out is it?

Both vehicles have to be MOTed and taxed (or recently expired). If the DVLA have any concerns about either vehicle then they'll request an inspection. My plate was transferred without any inspection being necessary.

They said that the S1 would have to be inspected because of its age. You can always ask first.

Another case of different rules for MOT and other inspections. A VIN plate is not required for an MOT on pre 1980 vehicles. But I guess the DVLA were concerned about the S1's true identity.
