What can i expect mpg wise - 200tdi
« on: February 26, 2009, 09:03:16 »
Hello everyone, I'm just drawing my project to a close.

Can someone give me an idea of what I can expect mpg wise with the following:

Series 3 gearbox
Rebuilt 200tdi
Disco diffs
750/16's
Truck cab body SWB,

Used on the motor way and around town, will be driven sensibly, not over 2.5K revs.

Just an estimate would be great, thanks in advance

200 tdi rrc with K&N filter + tons of steel bolted to it, i can manage 25-30 average but i do drive very steady and keep to 60mph. Keep the windows shut roofrack off when not needed and get a tonneau cover for the back and i reckon you'll do it no probs. good luck!

I'm expecting 35-40 due to rwd, less weight and not alot of drag.

SWB is lighter than a Disco, so I would expect fuel consumption to be as good or perhaps better. The series gearbox is the weak link in what you've done - you'll still have to 'over rev' between gears. If you had fitted a Disco gear/trans box, then you could expect better MPH than a disco - due to less weight. Road speed would be similar to a Disco as well, which would be quite scary in a series :)

Bit optimistic i think, remember its got the aerodynamics of a house brick and still weigh the best part of 1 3/4 ton and theres still a hell of a lot of metal to turn in the drivetrain, maybe freewheeling hubs would help a bit more. In the real world terms the wifes 1ltr yaris averages about 48 mpg which when im doing a longish motorway run can raise to 58mpg and that weighs about the same as my wallet(not much). The prima diesel canversion seems about the most frugal conversion ive seen.

last time i did long run in mine (slightly knackered 200tdi, rangey diffs, 235*85 tyres) i got about 32mpg, and that was keeping up with motorway traffic on the M1/m25. i was also quite heavily laden down with tools. i'm guessing with a truck cab you wont be carrying a lot in the back all the time, so you could possibly get 35 mpg crusing at more sensible speeds

the best i ever got was well over 35, but that was when my engine was running well and i was cruising in convey with another car towing a trailer so we only did 50mph

an overdrive would help a lot more, and its on my list of things to get :)

a truck cab wont be the most fuel efficient - due to the vortex created in the load bed - fit a hardtop this will 'improve' the aerodynamics slightly (yes I know its a series but every little bit helps)
