2a wont go into 3rd or 4th
« on: February 25, 2009, 14:55:12 »
Hi, I'm completely new to land rovers & bought my first one a week ago from my friend who's driven them for over 10 years. Its a 1964 2a, with an over drive fitted.

In the week since buying it its gotten me from sheffield to bakewell & then sheff to nottingham fine whilst the overdrive was disconnected/turned off. Yesterday my friend & I hooked the lever up once more & I've started using in 3rd & 4th. Today it's gotten me to work & back brilliantly, no complaints, no funny noises or anything. 4 hours later, however, & I cant get into 3rd or 4th. reverse, 1st & 2nd all working ok in both Hi & Low but i'm only getting half way movement & a grinding noise in 3rd, & it slips all the way into 4th but doesn't move despite massive revs.

I've noticed over the week that there's a lot of oil around what I'm assuming is the gear/transfer box & where the lever is on the underside of the car. I've checked the fluid levels (small metal cylinder at back left of engine) & that's full. The oil stick is also telling me full. My mate recons its not got enough oil in it, but i'm stumped on how to check!?

The landrover series 2 & 2a workshop manual suggest's "Incorrect adjustment of the gear change mechnism" or "clutch spinning or sticking on the pinion shaft" Can anybody advise who's already had the same problem?? cheers!

Oh yes, I've also noticed a lot of blue smoke pumping out when I start it up

If you folks can help I'd be extremely greatful!

TAKE THE TUNNEL OUT THAT IS ABOVE THE GEAR STICK. PUT THE BOX IN NEUTRAL AND C IF ALL THE LEVERS ARE ALL IN LINE. THESE R THE THINGS AT THE END OF THE GEAR STICK WHICH MOVE FORWARD AND BACK ON THE TOP OF THE BOX. IF THEY R IN LINE AND WONT MOVE THE BOX WANTS STRIPPPING. IF THEY R NOT IN LINE PULL THE 3/4 ONE IN LINE AND JOB DONE!!!

sounds like a problem with the 3/4 selector or syncro hub, there's a load of photos of the gearbox here http://ollr.10.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=3133&highlight=bit+gearboxes  (series 3 box but the 3/4th mechenism is the same, series 2 boxes don't have the syncros on 1/2)

If you take the tunnel out you can remove the top cover of the gearbox and see all the selector shafts and detents, (be careful doing this as the detents are ball bearings with springs and can drop in tot he box if you're not) you can remove the selector shafts and see the 3/4 syncro hub. 4th is a straight drive through from the primary pinion via the syncro hub on to the mainshaft, so my guess is that the hub has disintegrated, (about £45 from Craddocks).

Replacement isn't tricky, drop the box out whip the bell housing off and replace the syncro hub (making sure it's the right way around), though it's probably worth changing some of the bearings in there whilst you're at it, (Mainshaft, Layshaft, Primary pinion)

HTH

That's fantastic! some great advice, cheers pal.  I'll see what I can do, i've already bid on another gearbox on ebay, but hell, it'll do for spares right?   ;)

One of my ballmbearings have already dropped into the box after we removed the seating lid & the top off of the box yesterday, but if i drain it I'm sure i'll find them.

Since i'm a newby, who are Craddocks where are they situated?   :?

Prior to contacting you folks I got in touch with some people called LRS (land-rover repair service).  The guy quoted me £250 for the box swap.  That's after I've taken the seating box out & drained the box myself!  So £250 just to swap it around!   HA! good job I've got mates who've done it before eh     I checked Craddocks, I'll probably get another box & fit that, but use craddocks parts to see if I can repair the syncro hub myself.  That way there's no urgency. :afro:

Blimey

I 've swapped a series 3 box, on my own, in 6 1/2 hours, that's including taking out and refitting the seatbox and everything else.

Well I've got it back on the road again.  She's driving nice, the new clutch makes a b*stard of a rattle during clutch control, but otherwise she's running ok.  http://ollr.10.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=10611

I'd love to know where the oil leak is coming from, checking the dip stick shows I've not lost any oil, but i've got a leak none the less!  Good ole series 2's!

Anywho!  Anybody up for some laning during the school holiday?
