Loud rubbing noise coming from my 90... Sometimes
« on: February 07, 2009, 16:25:14 »
Something is broken.... :(

Randomly, there is a noise that sounds like something jammed between the tire and the body. It is a strange noise that can be felt and heard.

It is not engine related as it still does it with the engine off.

It is road speed related and gets slower the slower you go, ie it a rumble that starts quick and slow down with me.

There is nothing fouling the tires anywhere...

I thought that it might be ice clogging up and falling onto the wheel, but this morning I have removed all the ice that crammed up everywhere and it still does it.

I cant make it happen, it does it on its own.

When it happes, if you stop, them start again its gone!

Its doing my nut!!!!!

Any ideas?

Props look ok, no play in them.

Wheel bearings feel ok, although ive not had it on a jack yet.

Disc shield rubbing?

Did everyone see that?  Because I will NOT be doing it again!

Disk Brakes all round, no mud flaps.

I did wonder about the handbrake drum... but cant see how it would make that much of a noise!

I went for another drive last night, and it didnt happen.. So i can only assume that it was slush turning to ice somewhere underneath, and catching on something, but im bugggggered if i can see whats making it!

Right... Update.

Did it twice this morning on the way to tesco...

Ive found that if you slip the transfer box into neutral when it happens, the noise goes straight away.

Im going outside to remove the prop and handbrake...

I had an intermittent noise on my truck awhile ago in that area which was a rattle, rubbing and whining. Turned out to be the dust plate that's located behind the transfer box output flange to the front prop (front) . It would come loose, spin around and make an awful racket then suddenly stick in place and be quite till next time. Easy fix though.

This sounds very like a problem I have with my 110.  I've investgated all the 'obvious' areas but found nothing wrong.

I look forward to news if you find the cause!

Cheers,

Phil.

Crap in your drum brake maybe.

How often does he have to do that

Possibly gearbox bearing - where the prop enters the casing, Mine did it worse on "off throttle"   :-k

Hey

In the snow this afternoon it have removed rear prop, removed handbrake, drained oil from transfer box, removed inspection cover on transfer box - all looks ok. Nothing untoward in the oil. Refitted/refilled everything.

Been for a test drive, and all seems ok - but it was ok yesterday, and not this morning.

Its starting to do my nut.

I cant really book it in anywhere as i dont have a clue whats wrong with it to tell them where to look!

Sold the car  :D   it was the front prop where it went into the gearbox, i believe it had something to do with the bearing on the outer part of the box, but i shall bow down to others with better knonwledge :)
