I am thinking of getting a second winch and mounting it tothe rear of the disco, has anyone done this and if so how big a job is it....I know a lot of people have fitted them to challange motors but this would be just for lan9ng and the odd P&P day.....I have not chopped it about and dont really want to, to be honest I think I am clutching at straws but it would be nice to be able to do it.

iv put a rear winch tray in mine , yet to get a winch tho :roll:

i bought a 90 rear tray from ebay , only cost a few quid !

u say u dont want to cut it up but i cant realy see any other way of doing it , i cut the rear crossmember out and welded the 90 tray into the chassis

a friend of mine has got a rear winch fitted to his disco 1, its mounted in a heavy duty golddigga bumper with swivel recovery eyes in it. hes also got 2 batteries one for each winch

Get a receiver hitch and buy a removable winch tray, that way you can still tow, you could put the winch on the front, you can take it off when not needed and you don't have the weight at the back all the time.

I agree with RRB.
Mount the winch on a bit of plate, cut a hole on the plate to fit over your tow hitch. Run a pair of cables from the battery to an Anderson connector mounted on/near the tow hitch and bobs your aunty.
If its just for laning etc you wont need a massive winch anyway. I have seen a 4000lbs atv winch pull a 90 out of a ditch using this same method.

Am I right in thinking you are saying to use the front winch and some how run the cable back to the back of the disco..?..Or mount a removable plate at the back and mount a small winch on that...?

Is there such a thing as a rear winch bumper anywhere...?

I'm pretty sure what they are taking about is something like this....

The disco is unmodefied except for wiring the battery to a plug at the rear of the vehicle, A bit like this pic. Ideally mounted further up out of muds way and depending on the power of the winch, a larger model of plug than pictured example.

A winch is fixed to a mount which can be attched to the tow ball like this example

For the times I've actually needed a rear winch (pay and play, not competing), a Hi-lift has served me well.
I wouldn't want to permenantly mount a winch on the back of a discovery or RRC without doing like turbonutter and chopping out the rear crossmember to recese it. The departure angle is annoying enough as it is.

I dont like the idea of removable winch for some reason i like to have a winch on the front and a winch on the back

To hell with it, I am going to go for a proper job...I like the look of them pics Jay, Is that sherman in the bottom pic..?...Either that or the similar one that was on ebay last year for £12K...yes thats right £12K...it did not sell as you can guess.

Where am I gunna bolt my tank guard to though..!!...I will have to bolt it to the new winch tray I make I suppose..!

Will keep you guys informed, it will be a few weeks though but keep an eye out for the pics fellas.

That's the one I'm thinking of, it fits straight into a receiver hitch like the Scorpion or many American types. I'm goiung to get a Southdown drop plate modified to take one, then have the same at the front.

At the moment I have a Backrack from Dave Bowyer, it drops onto the towball and secures with a pin.

P.S., just a thought but if you weld a winch tray to your chassis, do you need an SVA test?

Why do I need an SVA then...I assume its because I have modified the structure of the vehicle..!...I dont think I will bother to be honest...How will they find out anyway..!

yes, if you play with the structural members of the vehicle it needs an sva. but like you say, they are not going to know. the only way that it could bite you back is if you (god forbid) have a big accident and there was an investigation. but like i say the defender crossmember corrodes and needs to be replaced. as 90% of people do not use origional landrover parts does it need an SVA???? what about an after market crossmember with a winch mount in it would that not need an sva? big grey area pal.

contridicting evereything i have just said but......damn they look cool with a winch in the arse end! :D

Scorpion do a demountable winch bracket, pic taken at Billing stand.

They also do a steel steering guard to make the same winch demountable at the front.

Again thanks for all the input guys, I am well up for it now...I gotta do this just for the hell of it...I dont know if I will ever use it but I guess when I do it will have paid for itself....And it will look the bolox...

There's some rule about repairing a chassis/structure that allows you to repair a chassis, but the rules are open to interpretation so if you weld something one that wasn't originally there then it needs an SVA.

RRB, So if I was to weld my rock sliders to the chassis would I need an SVA..!....I think this could open up a whole can of worms....Or bobtail it..!...Or weld a tow hook to the rear crossmember...!

I aint gunna bother with the SVA.....only use it once in a blue moon for laning and the odd p&p day anyway.

Correct, wel open to interpretation at least. When BlackBob stuck that Sierra on his RRC he fell fowl of the authorities because he had welded brakets ontot he outriggers to secure the Siearra body, That, within the rules, counts as altered. Any modification of the chassis away form the manufacturer's design counts as altered and the authorities are tightening up.

That's about the size of it, that and we are judged by the lowest common denominator (dumbing down), the assumption is that non of us know what we are doing and need to be told, often by people who really don't know what they are doing and decided to become politicians.
