smoking disco
meader:
i have been haveing few probs recently with lack of power after 3k rpm .anyway today i had a look round her and have found that there is alot of smoke coming from the oil breather and the oil cap but only wen off .so i took the pipe off and its capped in oil and so is the big black pipe that goes to the inlet on my turbo.also the intercooler has oil in it .think my engine is broken? :x
J.D.:
Oil in the breathers is a sign of a worn engine. Its likely to be due to bad oil changes or lack of servicing (not implying that it is you).
The first thing I would do is clean the intercooler out with parafin / petrol, clean all the hoses or buy new ones, do a complete oil change, renew the oil filter and oil separater filter, check the tappet clearances (0.20 mm inlet and exhaust) and go from there. Oil should be changed every 6,000 miles or earlier if heavy towing, or adverse operating conditions or running on veg oil

never heard of a oil seperateor were is that too and ill try that but i think its a tired engine it has 135k on the clock so i cant complaine too much.i cleaned it all out about 5 months ago wen it was off the road for a while put a nother turbo on it and every thing was fine back then .ill give any thing ago but will this also be the cause of lack of power after 3k rpm
L90OOK:
My Disco has 199,617 miles on it & still going strong.
Oil in pipe from turbo is normal on tdi's, as long as it's not excessive. The engines gonna slightly worn at 135K miles
Check the engines not breathing heavy, put your hand over the oil filler cap, cap removed, there should be a slight suction. If it is breathing heavy your hand will try to be blow away from filler.
On the air filter casing there is a smaller braided pipe that runs to the drivers side of the engine into a black plastic oil strainer, bolted to the rocker case.
Take that off & give it a good clean in parrafin. It would be worth cleaning the inlet pipes & intercooler too as mentioned.
Check tappets.
Be worth changing air, fuel & oil filters, & oil.
If the engine is ok then it would be worth putting a good quality injector cleaner or having the injectors reconned.
Check that your throttle cable hasn't stretched. Hold throttle flat to floor, engine off, & ensure it is hitting stops on pump.
Use a good quality fuel...not supermarket own!
