What age of engine will slot on a 1983 chassis?

Hi,
I have a shortened 1983 rangie chassis modified to take series bodywork which is my current project, I've got the rolling chassis ready but now i just need an engine and gearbox from a donor rangie, along with a few other bits. What i want to know is what age of 3.5 V8 engine will fit straight onto the 1983 chassis with the usual mountings etc? Judging by the Haynes manual it seems to suggest that about 1980 to 1987 Classics were similar enough for me to interchange the engines but can i buy a later one? I am just having trouble finding the right donor vehicle and it would be easier if i knew i could buy a later model if needs be, or indeed if a later engine fits would i be better off?
Any one any other suggestions or hints i should bear in mind?
Anyone got a cheap vehicle for sale, preferably with an LPG kit?

i will stand corrected but as far as i know the mounts will fit, the only mounts that dont fit are SD1 mounts as they are narrower, however the mountain brackets are interchangable on the block!

any v8 engine will drop in only difference will be wiring if u decided to put in a efi engine but you can stick ya carbs straight on2 a 3.9 or even a 4.2 v8 no problems
