What stops you making a buggy with a MIG?

The one thing I will say though is it seems like this vehicle may never be finished and just when it looks like its nearing completion it gets chopped up again.

I do have a simple solution to stop me getting too carried away modding land rovers.... Its called building a Locost sports car at the same time :lol: 4.5 years and counting since I started and the engine still hasn't run since I took the orgional escort for a thrash round the farm. I suppose the off roadong is a kind of sebatical.

no updates:(

saving money up for various things and had to pay out for various bills and such(bloody female ](*,)). so the 90 mile round trip(not including random trips to tescos, boc or elsewhere) costs a fare bit in petrol.

rinced overtime this week.......probibly did around 65-70 hours so pay packet should be nice and heavy next week. :grin:
but then again wont be going over there next week again to save money. week after i should be able to go mental and have some nice shiny things acomin :wink:

you are correct it is a fare travel. BUT if/when i get it sitting back on axles it might move in to the yard at work! plenty of space around the barn (where we keep the 45m truck mounts) and there is a huge not quite fully equipped workshop but there is space and a propper work area. and its a 30mile round trip.

as for the shiny things.....im not sure, i can go around it a few ways. buy tools/materials and get on with fab or buy hardwhare and get stuff working.....ie disk brakes for the 404s! probibly go see sue at boc and try and chat her up enough to do me a deal on a lincoln or a parweld tig :grin:

the build should get moving again soon ish

the dilleo was i was going to wait for a new shiney spidertrax-esq axle casing and obviously i diddnt want to start welding tabs onto axle casings that i wasnt going to use.......BUT ive been waiting patiently and  nothings happening, no phone calls, no email, nothing. so im going to weld standard LR bracketry to the MOG axle tubes, then when the A.R.T. axles become avalable ill switch over to 3 link with them. theni have some axle tubes to sell on pre converted for landrovers.

the main reason for me wanting these axle casings is that there probibly about 10KG lighter, each. could probibly gain an extra 3" diff clearance too becasue the mog axles have HUGE diffs! still calling around for brakes, the guy who is making the axle tubes is also making disk conversions which again will be very very nice but there not done yet :(
 
i will be taking the transit truck over to my work shop next week as i have "aquired" about 20 sq ft of 5mm thick black plastic so i can start on door cards and wheel arches :D and might be bringing the mog axle casings home to fab up the tabs......although YRM have started making weld on brackets......but am i prepared to spend £50 per axle on bracketry that looks like a pigion has [!Expletive Deleted!] on it? :lol:


im not keeping you guys in the dark and im not moving the build to another forum, this build was here from day1 and its not going to end its just literally nothing has happend.

Glad to hear that it is still going on mate, i never thought that lack of ground clearance issues and mog axles would ever have been used in the same sentence.

I have always wanted to try this but not in current funds bracket, one of the guys in our club has had thoughts of using 303 axles, they seem to be lighter but dont know much more about the pros and cons of any of the portals.

Look forward to seeing more pics as you get stuff done.

mog 404s

pros-
super strong
excelant build quality
evereything is interchaingable, ie axle casings are the same, the steering knuckles can be swapped from front to back, portal boxes are exactly the same
simple
cheap, between £200-1000 for an old set or £1500-3000 for a brand spanking new set

cons-
heavy, wet weight is between 480-550 kgs
width
diff offset hasto be chandes on the front axle
pinion conversions needed
disk brake conversion needed





Volvo C303

pros-
light, wet weight is something like 280-320kgs
narrower than mogs
landrover props bolt straight on(as there a Dana axle)


cons-
cost, cheapest set ive seen is £2000 and the most expencive was 8k
parts are becoming harder to get hold of everey day
no disk brakes
vaccume opperated difflock, maby just me but i find that a really over engineered way to operate a difflock!


there is another breed of portal made by simca, they are found on french troop transporters.......less said about them the better really ive seen a few builds with them and they look like a total nightmare!.......and there french!
however, if your willing to [throw it] about with them then you can get a set for next to nothing.


all in all, if you want to save money buy mogs, if you want to save weight buy volvos. but the mogs are alot stronger but does that justify the extra weight?




and i dont think i said a lack of diff clearance on the mog axles, i just think that the germans got a little lazy when it came to refining the axle casings when they realised they had cracked the portal idea :lol:
also trying to shed some weight off of them would like the truck to stay under 2000kgs which is a bit of an ask but i think its achiveable!

that is a great bit of info about the portals. If and when i get portals it will prob be mog axels due to price. I think i actually know of someone that has a few mogs in there garden so might have to make freinds with them.
I am well gutted, a few years back someone offered me a set of maxi drive porteled and lockered axles for a good price, but not knowing at that time what they were offering me i declined, what a fool, grrrr.

some one told me that a landrover maxi drive portal axle set cost 10k :shocked:

portaltek have made/are making a bolt on portal box for landrovers but there 3k for EACH rear box and 4k for EACH front box

there are also 2 other companys i know of that are playing around with the idea but it wont cost to much money but when i asked them about it they diddnt want to let on too much and they also diddnt want me to say who :( probily get it right if you made an educated guess lol

that has made me even more gutted, he only wanted 2k for both axles. Grrrr. Asked him a while back if he still had them and suppisingly someone had snapped his hand off. Dam shame i didnt know how good they were then. Ah well mogs i think it shall be after making the rest of the disco a bit better, ie roll cage and winches. After doing my first series of challenge events i am well pleased with how the pic up performed. To be honest my wife must hate you as it was reading this topic that finaly made me get round to doing it, cheers mate.

not as much done as i hoped. my nan had a spell in hospital last week and my girlfriend wanted to go see her(shes ok now) so i couldnt spend alot of time on the truck......any time really, just managed to drop the first jumbo schute off pick up my last portal box from the yanks place and got my dad to get the other portal box that i had dropped off to overland to get the hub nut off. its off and its not a nut!(photos to follow)

i have a choice now, and would appreciate some advice/pointers on it.
the brake conversion i mentioned involved me removing the old unimog hubs and replacing them with a new hubs machined up to the landrover PCD....obviously alot of monies but im thinking ofcutting the hub flange off, machining the hub canter(splined bit) down and machining up a new flange with the LR stud pattern and welding that on. definatly cheaper and more indepth, and i could say "I did that" but is the "Idid that" factor getting in the way of the "do it properly first time" factor???

any thoughts?

not muchly done really. lots of measuring and a little bit of chopping. quite annoying really, crossed the border into norfolk at about 7:30 this morning, left my dads house at about 10:30 after "catching up" then went off to the yanks place to get my short shaft and CV, he is storming ahead with the jeep! by the time i left there it was 12:30 ish so after driving back to the disco and having lunch i got about 4 hours to do stuff....... :lol:

so like i say, lots of measuring and i assembled the front axle bar the diff (this thing is going to be wide!) thinking that ill machine the mog hub down and weld on a new flange, jj has done this and it seems like a pretty sound way of doing it. going to track me down a nice brake disk and MAKE it fit too.



took me along time to get that down there!


thats a propper half shaft! there is a £2 coin there so you can get an idea

and provided all goes well i should have some 51" coilovers before 2010 :D :D :D :D

cheers mate,yeah.....its sort of coming together. next time i go down there ill make frames up to re skinn the floor and wheelarches. the question is should i use the plastic stuff i got from work or should i go buy some alli sheet?

after looking at the yanks rig ill be using a rear 4 link. looks fairly easey to set up (after you do all the maths) ill look at doing it to the front aswell but i may have issues when it comes to clearance between the upper triangulated links, the huge mog diff and the sump.
