However that doesn't apply to Cat. D write-offs, only Cats A-C.

What is it that you're worried about? If it was stolen and recovered to the original owner then no real problem. If it was stolen and not immediately recovered then the insurance company may have paid out and then own it - it which case it would be salvage.

It it was only broken into, then it isn't really a problem - my car was broken into a couple of years ago and I just replaced the broken window without involving the insurance at all.

The stolen flag is only going to cause a problem if, when you come to sell it, someone does a history check.

all it is is that i dont know what to do with it , bought it as a non runner got it going now. in the procces of tarting it up a bit then i thought it needs a bit of money spending on it as they do . but thought iff it was a recorded car it aint worth bothering with and to sell as is or break. thanks . alan..

thre is a number you can text your reg to and it sends you any info back - hpi clear etc
If yo uhave the log book, then chances are it Isnt recorded - we had to surrender the log book when one of our vehicles was shunted up the rear and recorded as cat C

saying that we have a Cat c clio now that was Cat c due to a busted headlight and a 1" scrape on edge of wing..

Here we go - the official stance:

The ABI Categories of 'Write-Off'

Category A: Scrap only - this vehicle should have been crushed. It should never reappear on the road and there are no economically salvageable parts. It is of value only for scrap metal - e.g. a totally burnt-out vehicle.

Category B: The bodyshell should have been crushed. The vehicle should never reappear on the road, but it can be broken for spare parts plus any residual scrap metal.

Category C: Vehicle extensively damaged and insurer has decided not to repair. The vehicle should have an independent inspection before being allowed back onto the road.

Category D: Vehicle damaged and insurer has decided not to repair.

Category F: Vehicle damaged by fire and insurer has decided not to repair.
