200tdi engine into a 300tdi disco ?!?!?!?!?
« on: October 10, 2008, 12:43:07 »
Hi all.......... I'm considering changing the 300tdi engine in my disco for a 200tdi engine.

Basically, I've had enough of doing the head gasket every 5000 miles on my 300 disco

It's come to the point where it's a new head as this one can't be skimmed again, and I have an old RRC here (rotten as a carrot!!) that has a good 200tdi in it.

My question is this - how simple is it to change?

Will the 200 go onto my R380 gearbox, or will I have to find an LT77? (Gearbox in rangey is - well - knackered  )

Exhaust not a problem - I have the RRC one, and I'm sure I can get that done.

Do I need different engine mounts, etc?

Any advice would be appreciated - I'm sure someone's done it before.

I don't know about the engine mounts but the bellhousing is different on the 300 to the 200 but whether you can get away with just changing the bellhousings over or whether you will need to swap the whole gearbox, I not sure.

On Defenders yes, but in RR and Disco both boxs fit the 300 TDi so logically a 200 will go on an R380. No idea on engine mounts. Tape measure will tell you. :)

Engine mounts will need to be chopped off and rewelded back on. But go for it mate, you can't beat the good old tractor 200

just done a 300 out and 200 in on my mate's disco.bell housing, clutch and slave cylinder all ok
...problems we encountered were
engine mounts ,use the 200 ones
used the 200 rad and intercooler (rad pipes in wrong place)
200 power steering pipes (300 end would not fit 200 power steering pump)
fuel pipes to lift pump and fuel filter(different ends causing air to get into system) didnt notice this fault till we test drove it and was suffering from fuel starvation
200 exhaust system all the way thru
200 alternator cos belt drive different
200 airbox
disreguard extra wires going to fuel pump, there's a block of 3 (i think wires that are no longer used)

any further info ya need i will be only too glad to help if poss ...ask on here or phone me .
