Up-grading 300tdi
davidjmiller:
Hi,
thinking about improving my 300 tdi disco 1. So far I've put on new BFG AT's, the largest size you can without a lift and a diff gaurd (there's another in garage waiting to be fitted). This is what I plan to, in order.....
steering guard, would have gone on today if it was not for the rain
EGR removal
Remove downpipe cat
bigger intercooler
some kind of engine remap?
I'm not into heavy off-roading and I certainly have no plans to go to pay-and-play sites. I want to keep the disco quite road friendly and do some gentle greenlaning, maybe in time some expo's to the Pyrenees or N Africa.
Any comments on the ideas, the order and which intercooler, remap to go for?????
Cheers,
David
boss:
a 300 is mechanically controled and you cannot get a remap.
for an egr blanking plate you can cut up the braded hose and weld up one of the ends and use that.
also not meaning to be disrespectfull to the intercooler companies but why dont you jsut got to a breakers and get another 300TDI cooler for £15 and plumb that in aswell.
Range Rover Blues:
Bigger ontercooler will allow a tweak on the fuel pump, the extra air allows you to burn more fuel without smoking (the smoke being the limiting factor to how heavily the engine can be tuned when new).
Then that de-catted exhaust and single pipe system will give you more grunt too, making up for bigger tyres.
Other than that, unless you want to get into lifting the thing then some sensible body protection as you've listed. Sill guards might prove more useful than diff guards, it depends what you're doing. The towbar will protect the fuel tank for now.
If you decide to lift the thing, budget on the springs and shocks being only half the job. Longer brake flexis, castor correction, Cardan jointed prop and cranked rear arms tend to follow. Then perhaps spring location cones (you may choose these plus longer shocks before a lift).
Your choices are limited only by your budget ;)
Have fun.

Boss has raised a valid point here when he said just get another intercooler and plumb that in as well, this is the road i was thinging about because i cant justify the huge amounts of cash they want for an upgraded one,has anyone done this to theres,i would be very interested in any piccys if you have.
boss:
i will be doing it soon ;) not spending £300 on a bloody cooler! you could probibly get 3 or 4 in the space where the rad is. then just have a friendley chat with the bloke at siliconehoses.com. the formula 3 racing car we had at college had dual stage intercoolers on it they were ones the size of a 300 disco but they worked damn well. all in all if you have to spend £15 on a nother cooler and another £30 on hoses then it is the cheapest/best power increase you can do!
