pug 205 GTI

my neighbour has a pug diesel 205 GTI and it wont start...
i traced back to the fuel to make sure fuel was coming through, and on top of the tank i took off one of the hoses and blew the fuel through to the filter... it ticked over for about 2 seconds (!) then cut out, and when i tried turning the key again after it tried starting but seemed like fuel starvation... is it the lift pump that has given up the ghost? or am i being dim and missing something? (where is the lift pump on one of those by the way?!)

any help gratefully recieved!!

they didnt do a GTdi in the 205

The pump is part of tje sender unit on both the diesel and petrol, sounds to me like the pump is up it ?

What happens if you build up pressure in the system using the priming bulb? will it start then? will it keep running if you keep pumping the bulb?
