last night broke down off the A24 first heard a belt snap and something gettin caught in the engine i kept driving got to a station, the car was over heating, fan belt had completely torn, water pump was frozen and the pulley was bent out at a slight angle, there was alot of hissing and some serious steam, now im back had a look the rest seems normal, more oil on the around the right side of the engine bay but i have no idea how this happened, what the real damage is and what to do? all help appreciated thanks.  :D

sounds like the bearing in water pump seized, causing the fan belt to snap

first thing to do is to replace the water pump, then see if the engine runs

If the engine has got too hot, there is a good chance that the cylinder head will have warped.
You may get away with having it skimmed, but you may have to buy a new one.

I suggest you replace the pump and belt, then start the engine and see how it runs. If the engine has been cooked - it may not be immediately noticeable though. The head gasket may be significantly weakened by the heat and blow at a later date. It doesn't necessarily mean that the head has warped, but it would be wise to get it checked anyway. Did the temperature guage go right into the red?

its going in for a timing belt this week, so its getting the pump changed will ask him to have a look at it, it was just steam no serious smoke but obviously dont no about these things will see, but as usual the temperature gauge didnt do anything just like always. thanks for all the help guys. The exact same thing happened to me when driving back from Billing. The water pump needed replacing. I bought a replacement from Paddocks for about £35 (plus £10 for the viscous coupling 'special' spanner) and fitted it myself! Which for a relative new-comer to mechanics was a doddle! :dance:
