Changing door glass in a classc

Does anyone know how to change the front & rear door glass in a RRC?

I haven't done it before but would imagine it won't be to hard but some easy to follow instructions will make life easier.

It's fairly straighforward matey... except for getting the window lifters out then back in again and they are just b****dy awkward due to the small access spaces left behind.

You'll probably need to replace the brassinated window holder (Sorry, don't know the correct title, but it grips the bottom of the window glass). It's a friction fit with some rubber gasket material and is pretty scary to fit... but some judicious use of a rubber mallet and a well supported window did the job.

It's also a good opportunity to replace the window channel gasket that the window sits in when wound up, and maybe the weather gasket around top of bottom half of door.

You might also want to invest in some spare door card fasteners (Red Spikes) as quite a few gave up trying to remove them.

Right... steps... as I remember them:

• Remove door card
• Remove mirror
• Use gaffer tape to tape window in place, DON'T use sparingly!
• Remove window lifter mechanism & motor (Put plenty of time aside for this!)
• Remove weather gasket from top of bottom half of door
• Unbolt window frame from door (4 bolts?)
• Remove window frame & glass
• Turn window frame upside down and remove glass, carefully!
• Remove rotten window channel & replace with new
• Replace window gasket in window frame
• Reverse process

Thanks for that skibum, its a big help.

It made me think about replacing the window channel gasket, any idea where to get it from?

Also do you know if you can just remove the frame & leave the window in place? The reason I ask is because the only reason I was removing the glass to tint it but if I just remove the frame I can tint the glass in the door.

Reggie, I got my glass channel from a stealership, think they had to order it in but it's worth trying places like paddocks etc.

The whole window frame and glass lifts up out of the door (leaving the door looking a bit like an old series door without the door top on). This I assume would be perfect for tinting as it allows you access to the whole glass.

It's important to realise that the only thing holding the glass up is the window winder actuators (assuming you have electric windows!). Once that's off, the whole thing lifts out of the door and if you don;t have the all important gaffer tape in place... you'll here a small whistling sound (similar to the Wylie E Coyote falling sound... but much shorter!) followed by a bang/shatter!

I'd recommend getting hold of the necessary pages of a workshop book. The CD can be had from your local stealership for about £15.

Done the back ones yesterday, it was a bit of a nightmare as the window frames were rusty at the bottom so had to be treated first.

Also quarters in the back doors are a real [person of questionable parentage] to get back in , probably not to bad if I wasn't worried about damaging the tint which I did....... Now I've got the fronts to do, I didn't bother with the window channel gasket as it looked ok.

A good tip (I worked in the windscreen trade for years)...Get a marker pen, and draw around the bolts on the side of the frame before loosening, so you get the lines right when you put it back together !

oh and be careful tinting frount side windows it is elegal as a polite police officer pointed out to me ([!Expletive Deleted!] if only I known befor gave me 7 days to ge it done (the nice officer)

Window channels are about £17/ea from craddocks, a roll of the soft gasket stuff is also available from there.

I know all about the crap tinting laws, I've had cars tinted for years...................just don't stop when the blue light comes on......... :lol:
