Right then, I think I am probably about to open a can of worms. Firstly I would like to apologise in advance, and secondly it is in pure innocence that I do this.
The history is that I have had a Shogun Sport (like challenger) for about 15 months and had great enjoyment on and off road. Unfortunately, this has now been stolen and I am preparing myself for not getting back!!!.
The issue I have is that I am thinking of replacing with the larger version of Shogun/Pajero but dont really know about the models and what the differences, subtle or otherwise, might be.

I will probably have around £5,000 to £7,000 to spend on a replacement and need to know what I might expect with regards to the spec and engine size.

Some of the things I need to know are:

Which model and what the differences are between the specs. The year the spec changed would be good info too.
Import or not.
Engine size and the difference in performance between diesel and petrol
Fuel consumption for town and long distance.
Tyres sizes and possible 'best make' for off roading. I did have BFG AT's on the Sport and they seemed fine for both.

I also need to know the bad points too, so I know where to look for trouble spots when I buy.

I know this is a tall order, but I an sure any info will be great advice.

Phew - don't wanna know much do you ...

OK SWB (5 seats 3 doors) or LWB (7 seats and 5 doors) ?

Engine ?  Petrol 3.0 or 3.5 or Diesel 2.5 or 2.8 ?

Export deffo - lower price, better nick and all the toys.

Tyres - BF Goodrich All Terrains are excellent on these unless you floor a 3.5 on a bend in the wet (then you deserve what you get lol)

Usual caveats for used cars but...

Check all 4WD system works as should (do not turn on tarmac wil centre diff locked) and if 2.5 diesel, when belts changed. Also look for any signs of overheating - brass showing round rad cap, stained expansion tank around cap, oil film in coolant.

Thanks Tim, I am also asking similar question in POCUK. It seems I need (want.... :) ) a SWB 2.8 or 3000 with a nice price attached. I will admit I am cautious about an import, but enough are out there to suggest it cant be bad at all :)
