Mis-firing Td5
« on: June 30, 2008, 17:00:43 »
The Disco's poorly........it only seems to be running on 4 pots. If I re-start the engine then it runs fine - but not for very long (maybe 10 mins), after which it's back to 4 cylinders. My Nanocom reckons that injector 2 is having 'issues' - two error codes have been logged 'injector 2 open circuit' and 'injector 2 peak charge too long', does anyone know what these errors mean (other than £400 for a new injector )

It's a '52 plate Td5, 108000 on the clock - and last time I checked (a while ago), no sign of oil in the injector harness, although I will check this again later today.

Very good point - but even if there's no oil in it ? (which I haven't checked yet)

Hello...

First, get the rocker cover off and check all the plugs are correctly latched - there was actually a problem at one point the plugs not being plugged onto the injector correctly.  Also pin the harness out with a multimeter to check for faults (can even pin back all the way to the ECU - easier in a Disco)

Next...
Ideally, by process of elimination you should swap the injectors round - and put number 2 injector into a different cylinder and see if the problem follows the injector.

As it's just one injector then unfor. it does sound like the injector is to fault.

Right, I'm off outside to try all the above - do I really need a special tool the get the injectors out, or is there a way of 'making do' ?

Land Rover suggest a slide hammer arrangement... but I know other people who have just levered them out with screwdrivers/pry bars (or even a 10mm allen key - cut into a pry bar shape).

You should swap the injector coding round too... but in the short term this won't make any difference.

I had exactly that fault on a TD5 Discovery. Running on 4 and the same error codes. Changed the injector loom and all fine. Have to clear the fault codes afterwards tho'.

 :D :D :D

45 quids worth of new injector loom and it's sorted ( [-o<)

I took the acoustic cover off, and unplugged the black connector at the front of the rocker cover - and oil virtually poured out of it. The oil has started to leak out of the loom at the red ECU plug, but it doesn't look too bad. I replaced the injector loom, cleaned out the connectors on the injector tops, cleaned the ECU and red connector, bolted it all back together, road tested and so far so good................

Oh yes, who said Td5's were 'not for the home mechanic'.

My missus couldn't understand why I needed the Nanocom when I bought it - my local Independant charges £40 a go to interogate vehicles with his Rovacom, I reckon I've got my money back several times over now !
