zf auto, wont go into gear?? please help!
« on: May 28, 2008, 21:41:05 »
Hi guys, my friend has a range rover he uses occasionally for offroading. We went up to it yesterday for the frist time in about 6 months and started it, it started fine but the gearbox wouldn't move out of neutral, regardless of where the transfer box is (high, low and neutral). When it was parked up the gearbox was stiff to move but not impossible. The oil has a slight hint of brown to it but is still at the correct level. What do you think could be the problem?

Sounds like the selector cable has seized.

It does sound that way but with an auto changing the oil is always a good place to start.

how do I get to the selector cable? Is there anyway that it can be unseized or will it need to be replaced?

If you look under the vehicle the cable should be on he near side, spray it wityh lots of wd40 and leave a coulpe of hours. then try and move the gear selecta, may be a good idea to ghange the oil and filter at the same time. Only put in the right amount of oil as there could be problems. Always check level when cold first, engine not running, then again whilst running, should be same level oncve its setled  down.
