My mechanic said that the Volvo was chugging/hunting/stalling because the air flow meter had packed in.

Bought a new one from ebay. Put it on tonight and it makes no difference. Still chugging/hunting/stalling.

What's the next stage?

Could be the throttle position sensor not registering correctly, or the coolant temp. sensor not working, making the ECU think the engine's cold (and, in carb terms, running on full choke).
The only real way to sort this is a stint on the ECU reader to find out exactly what's wrong.
Meantime, check all connections to the MAP for leaks etc.

Hi mate sorry it took so long to get back to you some reason i was not notified of your reply  :? Great cars the v70 T5  we don't have many left at work now we have moved on to the S60 T5 with 250bhp  :-# We have had a few cars with similar faults to yours and its turned out be the throttle body dirty around the butterfly. It's not a bad job just a bit tricky it's a black unit that sits under  the inlet manifold by 4 small bolts if i remember correctly  :-k remove these and disconnect the plug and give it a good clean with carb spray and get it all shiny again  :D it's got to worth a go.......Mike

What do you do for work?

Mine (or rather SWMBO's) is not badged as a T5 but reading the vehicle specs I can't see what the difference is between a T5 and ours.

Many, many thanks for the tip - I'll give it a go this weekend. It could prove tricky for me as I'm 6'5" and working on these "little cars" is really tricky. When I fitted the AFM I kept banging my head on that stupid grille attached to to bonnet.

Keep you posted.

I love it! I'd buy one if it was in dark metallic green.

Anyhow, had a look at the old girl today. How tight do they pack the bits in? I don't know what bit is what and if I did I couldn't get to it. Next step is back to the mechanic.

Many thanks for the advice again. I'll keep you posted.

An update......

The throttle body was replaced back in 2003. In July Volvo did a clean as a "good grace" gesture. They've checked every thing and put in new plugs. Still the same. Waiting for a throttle module to see if this helps...................

No fault codes reported then?  .....or did they even check that!?

If it's not AFM or dirty throttle body (and it's not...I've read the thread :) ) then next has to be plugs, HT leads and ignition module.

Even tho there are lots of electronic on the more modern car, they all still rely on the basic principle of correct mixture and suffient spark :)

Each check showed 4/5 cylinders misfiring - No suprise there.

Going to wait until they have this throttle module (is this the same as the ignition module) in stock an see how it goes....

Hi mate why not try a new set of plugs and changing over coils 4 & 5 with 1 & 2 and then get the codes checked again to see if the misfire has moved to cylinders 1 & 2 if its moved it got to be the coils  :-k

The plugs have already been done but I like the logic of swapping the coils over. We are waiting for this module which is on order and I will ask the garage to swap the coils when they have it back.

As before, I'll keep you all updated.....................

Have a word with Volvo, there is a well known hassle with the ETM unit (mostly duff) these need to go in for a clean and software update. This is free.
The problem is that the little fingers in the ETM wareout. This gives mixed signals to the ecu.
Been there done that!
Had two Air flow meters my self.
If the ETM needs changing look at around £200-£300 as Volvo put in towards it.
