I'm just asking this question for the good points and the bad points of both engine types, as am thinking of swapping our 2.5 turbo lwb diesel for a 3leter petrol, it will (as dose our above truck ) get allot of off road use (green laning fording etc)

I've had both V6's and diesel Pajeros and on the road I'd take the petrol version everytime.  Much better performance, and aslong as you don't go silly the MPG is about the same.  Both are fine offroad, you just don't get as good engine braking with the petrol and you have to be a bit more careful in deep water.
