2L L-series diesel problem
« on: May 04, 2008, 13:22:29 »
My wife has a Rover 220SDi, which uses the same 2L L-series engine as the original Freelander (pre-TD4), hence me posting a question in here.

The engine's always been bombproof, apart from a couple of failed glow plugs.  It's been serviced on schedule and recently I changed the fuel filter and re-primed it.  However, just over the last couple of days, it starts fine, then stalls a couple of seconds later, and is hard to restart, with a lot of turning over and dark grey smoke before it fires up again.

It doesn't do this every time;  sometimes it fires up and runs perfectly.

Any suggestions?  It has done about 85,000 miles, is 11 years old and has had a cambelt change in the last 6,000 miles.
