Hi first post in disco section! im picking up a well rusted 200tdi disco thats gonna be a donna engine for my series, it hasnt had a cambelt change for over 6 years and has been a daily drive, doesn't smoke and is good runner, but im scared of driving her back now (270 miles) in case belt goes!?
guess its just luck really? will try get trialer but not sure if can!
low revs and easy driving if i do i guess!?
how big a job is it to change belt? and wheres the best place to get a kit for it?

I wouldn't worry about driving it if it has been a daily drive. If it had been sat for 6 years then I would change the cam belt before starting the engine.

I would, however, change the cam belt before fitting to the Series.

It is a DIY job provided you can undo the crank bolt. The usual trick is to use a big socket on a breaking bar and jam that against the chassis rail and 'flick' the starter to 'crack' it off then undo from there.

You can get a kit from any motor factor or LR parts supplier. Make sure that it is a Gates kit (or if not a Dayco). Gates are the OE manufacture for the 200Tdi cam belt. Definately get a kit and change the tensioner as well; it's false economy not to.

Replacing the cambelt on a 200TDi engine. The vehicle shown is a defender, but timing marks and method of changing it are the same.

I did mine myself. The only real problem I found was not actually on mine but my brothers and that was the bottom pulley bolt. God they can be TIGHT! But after that it was straight forward,  with just my A bar in the way!

She made it home safe! 275 miles, no worries! 5 door, electric windows n mirrors, 2 sunroofs, not a dent on any panel! blue/green, will be putting bits up 4 sale off her ( in 4 sale section obviously!) or let me know if want any specific bits!

all the kits i can find only have 1 seal with them and its called a front cover seal, which i suppose is the dust seal! do i need the crankshaft front oil seal ?? also i do need an idler pulley too right?
ebay seems to be the best price at £46 for kit and dayco belt, where do you get yours?

yep get the crankseal to. youl kick yourself if you dont. most kits come with the pully. check paddocks. think ive seen them slightly cheeper
