hi
can i ask for a bit of advice
my nephew hes 16 is keen to buy a landy but hes after a series and wants to buy one thats tax exempt, but hes got £1000 to spend do you reckon hes going to get one thats reasonable decent hes 16 im going to help him a bit but need something thats not going to be a nail to start off, dont want to put off a future land rover enthusiast reckon theres a chance theres one ut there or any ideas what Tax exempt landys are selling for probable a series 2 hoping for a series 3 !

£1,000 will get a tax exempt leafer, but it will be in a poor condition (i.e. expect lots of work) and may lack MOT and tax. The tax exempt Land Rovers are constantly gaining value now. You will also have difficulty in finding a genuine Series 3 that is tax exempt, as they only made them from 1971 and the tax exemption cut off date is 1st January 1973.
Decent Series 2 and 2A motors are now fetching at least £1,500 at the very lowest if not £2,000.
Of course, as with anything there are the very rare exceptions to this rule.

They are out there i sold a tax exempt s111 for under a grand - EBAY.. that was pretty good one too big new tyres too!
just aim for a basic solid starting block!
Dont worry tho at 16 i got my lightweight and its had tonnes of problems along the way, but i aint been put off! i must be MAD.

I bought a S2a SWB with 12 months MOT in December for £1000. Excellent chassis and bulkhead. Drove it 300miles home, and have done 40 miles a day ever since. Haven't needed to do any work on it, but it's inevitably going to need something in the future.
Got a another S2a Truck Cab from Ebay for £699 also with 12mths MOT, but I needed a new pair of seats (£70), front brakes (£40), steering link and TRE's (£30) and a new fuel pump pipe, and will need a bit of chassis welding before next MOT.
Painted them both, cost £50 for etch primer and paint.
They are definitely out there, and at a reasonable price still. If you're seriously interested join the S2 forum and stick up a wanted ad (that's how I got mine).

My experiance says you can, but need to be careful.
I bought a SIII tax exempt wiht mot off ebay fot £530 without looking at it. It was not in quite as good condition as implied (although no lies) and the "rusty bulkhead" needed repalcement and the recent gear box was a duffer it also need swivels and springs, so id say it needed about £200-300 in parts to get throught he next mot, although I could be being a perfectionist. and the chassis needs welding.
I also saw a local S2 on ebay with freewheel hubs and OD, it went for £450 ish and was a TOTAL NAIL (I had a look at it as it was down the road). Only worth breaking.
With cars this old you really need to look at them as condition is very variabl;e and if you have to travel that could rack up a lot of pertol £££, so the local papaers may be a good route as you wont get excited about something that looks lince on the pitcture or has a shiny winch/nice wheels etc on it.
Other people have paid in the £600-1000 range and got some decent cars so they are out there, but you need to be sensible and look.
Also there is a Landrover Series restoration manual (Published by LRO) that has some good buyers tips including an inspection regieme.

I paid £500 for mine, but have had to spend money on it in teh 2 years I've been using it as my daily drive since then, tyres, new springs, battery etc. Remember that a new Galv Chassis isn't that expensive, so buying a cheep one with a knackered chassis and doing a chassis swap could be a good option. Old Landies with no MOT really aren't worth an awful lot so you should be able to pick up a bargain somewhere.

Would agree - you can pick up a saveable Series quite cheaply. Mine came from an add in ASDA and cost £350 (if you look, you find!) I would say it was in fairly good condition considering, BUT it still cost me a few hundred to get back on the road, and I can weld.
I don't know how practical the lad is, but what I would consider doing in his position is look to pay about £800 for one with an MOT and buy a Mig welder with the rest of the money and learn to weld. That'll save a lot of money in the long run.
Although parts are really cheap and mostly easy to replace, he does need to consider the fuel expenses. Petrol engined ones will do about a third to the gallon of the type of small engined car a 16 year old would usually buy (Saxo, Clio, etc).............If he is in to classic cars then maybe he should consider starting with something else that has a small engine and is tax exempt :-k

bought my 2a for a £1000, thats tax exempt came with 6months mot and a dirty great v8 in her [-o<
lol though prob wouldnt wanna insure a v8 at 16 lol

Make sure it really is tax - exempt and not made into one. I bought a 1967 S2A for a couple of hundred quid. It came with an expired free tax disc and the log book said it was a Historic vehicle. Unfortunately it had 3 different chassis numbers. Chassis was S3, inner bulkhead was S2A (and was the same as the log book/registration No), the front panel had a different chassis number yet again and was a S3 item. I stripped it in the end and scrapped the Reg :(
