Hammerite paint not drying...

(1/3) > >>

V8MoneyPit:
Anyones else run into this?

I bought a couple of tins of Hammerite smooth a few weeks ago. One is fine. The other doesn't want to dry completely. One of the items in question (Panhard rod) was taken back to bare metal last Saturday and painted with the Hammerite. Nearly a week later, it has got to the stage where it can be handled, but it's still feels 'tacky'. And if it's layed down, it sticks to whatever it's on.

I've had a frost watch type heater right next to it for the last few days and it's made no difference!

It's nothing to do with the rod specifically. It's the same on several parts that were painted last weekend and early this week.

Now I've got to get the paint off so I can start again. It'll clog a sanding disc straight away, so I suspect I'll have to use thinners to try and soften it. Or maybe a hot air gun to try and blister it off.

when ive used hammerite in the past and not stirred it properly its had the same effect,

to remove the paint i would use thinners it will clean the surface at the same time,

V8MoneyPit:
I think I've stirred it OK. It tells you not to stir it too much!

Just had a reply on another forum that suggests using primer even though the tin says you don't need to. His experience was with a clean shotblasted item that took 2 weeks to fully harden
He then did another with 2 pack primer first and it was dry within the day.

ronttuk:
tempreture can have a lot to do with paint drying

davidlandy:
also not allowing it to dry between coats doesnt help.
